About the role

The Principal Communications role is responsible for the development and execution of Olympic Dam’s communication strategy, incorporating workforce engagement, digital communication, leadership support, media relations, issues management, advertising and other external communications.

The accountabilities of the role include:
  • Lead Olympic Dam’s communications strategy to support BHP and Olympic Dam’s business goals
  • Build and maintain relationships to collaborate effectively with a wide range of internal stakeholders including corporate affairs, communications, media, Olympic Dam leadership and operational teams
  • Develop and oversee communication and external engagement plans for Olympic Dam leadership team
  • Drive positive change to enhance Olympic Dam’s workforce engagement and frontline communications capabilities
  • Manage BHP’s South Australian media relationships, proactive and reactive engagement, announcements and issues, in alignment with BHP’s global media team
  • Develop and execute effective communication plans to unplanned events or issues, including internal and external requirements
  • Provide direction and development to the Specialist Communications Olympic Dam
  • Work effectively in a matrix organisational structure and develop strong working relationships across BHP’s Australian assets, corporate head office and global operations
  • Travel to site (Olympic Dam / Roxby Downs) on a regular basis to ensure alignment with operational needs and assess the efficacy of internal engagement programs


About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for someone with a mix of the following skills and experience:
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience working in an ASX-listed company environment or equivalent. Experience in the resources / energy sector desirable
  • Working in a matrix model with multiple reporting lines
  • Experience in communications strategy, planning and project management
  • Very high level written and oral communications skills
  • Media relationships and issues management
  • Workforce engagement and internal communications
  • Digital media planning and execution
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications
