About the role

The Competition Counsel Australia supports the asset, functions and business legal teams across Minerals Australia in relation to the design, maintenance and implementation of our Competition Compliance Framework.  In this role, you will be responsible for the provision and procurement of competition law-related legal advice, preparation and maintenance of training materials, and participation in investigations and litigation with competition law aspects. Reporting to the Vice President Legal Regulatory & Disputes, and working as part of our Competition Unit legal team, you will be accountable for supporting the asset, functions and business legal teams across Minerals Australia in relation to the following:

  • Identification of emerging competition law risk (including through participation in risk assessments);

  • Maintenance and implementation of the Competition Compliance Framework (including Our Requirements); 

  • Provision and procurement of competition law advice and guidance on behalf of our Businesses and Functions, including in relation to the review of domestic transactions, management of risk, contractual protections and embedding and implementation of competition law compliance policies and procedures; 

  • Preparation and maintenance of training, communications and guidance materials and the delivery of tailored competition law training to relevant teams within the Business and Functions;

  • Research on competition law-related issues;

  • Internal lead on competition law-related investigations;  

  • Monitoring of relevant developments in competition law and assisting with the identification and execution of improvements to the Competition Compliance Framework and associated systems as necessary;

  • Share competition law knowhow with relevant internal stakeholders;

  • Assist with compilation of relevant data and information for the purposes of internal reporting.

About You

  • Tertiary qualifications in law

  • Entitlement to practice in Australia

  • Strong experience of Australian competition law in private practice, or in-house

  • Exposure to competition laws of jurisdictions other than Australia

  • Experience in the energy and resources sector, including JV arrangements

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work autonomously but also to work effectively within a team.
