About the role

Working in our Dams Team, you will provide specialist advice and support to the management of dams at the OD.  The Dams Team provides governance, oversight and technical support, assisting the operational teams to achieve safe and efficient operation of the tailings, process and water dams around site. 

Reporting to the Superintendent Dams, you will perform engineering support tasks, review operational practices and documents, manage consultant scopes of work, identify improvement opportunities and assist in the successful implementation of projects. Establishing and maintaining relationships with the operational teams will be critical to ensure success in this role.

Please note this position is based at Olympic Dam, operating on a 5/2 residential, or 5/2/4/3 FIFO (from Adelaide) roster, alternative rosters may also be considered.

In this role you will:
  • Be first and foremost focused on creating a culture of care by being a visible safety leader.
  • Demonstrate safety leadership by supporting the Field Leadership program to leading/coach continuous safety improvement and performance
  • Engage and form lasting relationships with operations, maintenance and project teams.
  • Advice on inputs for forecasting capacity requirements of dams.
  • Provide feedback to the Planning function to improve future execution plans, designs, schedules and forecasts
  • Identify safety and governance gaps, and recommend improvement opportunities.
  • Compile reports and provide expertise to other teams in relation to dam safety management.
  • Review and refine relevant operating standards, procedures and work instructions to ensure safe systems of work are embedded and effective
  • Liaise with operational crews to ensure that new ideas are developed and practically implemented.
  • Monitor and report to stakeholders status, progress and updates related to the Engineering Support activities
  • Ensure that the required BHP and Industry Dam Standards are used as the basis of design for projects and work with the Standards and Governance Engineers to ensure Engineering Standards are improved and maintained
  • Provide technical guidance to support third parties to align with BHP and Industry Dam Standards
  • Drive ongoing improvement of the safe management of dams through identification and implementation of improvement initiatives
  • Carry out tasks including analysis of key performance metrics and benchmarks to support safe operation of the dams

About You

  • Tertiary qualified in civil or geotechnical engineering
  • Previous experience in tailings and water dams highly desirable
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards for Dams (ANCOLD, CDA) desirable
  • Problem solving and risk management skills
  • Ability to influence, engage with & communicate effectively across multiple levels, business units and functional areas
  • Demonstrate the confidence to lead by example, hold yourself and others accountable and coach others in ‘Safety Leadership’
  • Ability to develop credibility with discipline leads and technical stakeholder groups
  • Inclusive team player that is proactive, self-driven and accountable
  • Effective communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Confident to coach, lead and initiate change
