About BHP

At BHP we support our people to grow, learn, develop their skills and reach their potential. With a global portfolio of operations, we offer a diverse and inclusive environment with extraordinary career opportunities.  Our strategy is to focus on creating a safe work environment where our employees feel strongly connected to our values and objectives, and where the capability of our people is key to our success. Come and be a part of this success.

About the role

The BHP WA Iron Ore owned and operated railway is an essential component of our Iron Ore operations and is one of Australia’s longest privately owned railways.

The rail line, consisting of both single and double tracks, connects our mine operations including Mt Whaleback, Eastern Ridge, Yandi, Mining Area C and Jimblebar mines to port infrastructure in Port Hedland.
WAIO’s rail team operates 24 hours a day seven days a week.

Reporting to the Asset President, as a key member of the Asset Leadership Team, the General Manager Rail provides strategic leadership and management expertise to ensure that the rail operations are delivered in a safe, reliable, and cost effective manner and that any business risk is managed effectively.

This role will be based in Port Hedland and the successful candidate must ensure they immerse themselves into the Port Hedland Community by building on and maintaining existing relationships with our community stakeholders and partners.

Our preference would be for this role to be residentially based within the town, however we are open to other flexible work options, depending on the suitable candidate and their individual situation.

In this role you will:
  • Be first and foremost focused on creating a culture of care by being a visible safety leader, engaging, developing and coaching your team.
  • Own HSE outcomes and ensure compliance with statutory and HSE performance requirements and controls.
  • Deliver superior outcomes against the Asset operational plans and life of asset management.
  • Drive and support the continuous improvement cycle to increase value in the rail operation and enable benchmark performance in operational capacity, unit costs and capital efficiencies.
  • Drive consistent expectations, understanding and application of standards/procedures within the team.
  • Identify and develop talent and capability in the operation.

About You

You will have:
  • Deep technical understanding of the rail industry from a resources, transport or heavy haulage background.
  • Exceptional track record delivering on key metrics including productivity, cost and safety across a large scale operation in a complex multi-layer organisation.
  • Demonstrated confidence leading by example, holding yourself and others accountable and coaching others in ‘Safety Leadership’.
  • Proven ability to create a culture of care and trust through your leadership and shadow.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively – talks about “we together” rather than them and us.
  • Proven ability to influence and mentor others to achieve a collective goal.
  • Strong desire to pursue and achieve excellence and consistent high performance.
  • Ability to operate at multiple levels and across disciplines in a complex multi-layer organisation.
  • Relevant engineering and/or commercial tertiary qualifications.

Supporting a diverse workforce

At BHP, we recognise that we are strengthened by diversity. We are committed to providing a work environment in which everyone is included, treated fairly and with respect. We are an Equal Opportunity employer and we encourage applications from women and Indigenous people. We know there are many aspects of our employees’ lives that are important, and work is only one of these, so we offer benefits to enable your work to fit with your life.  These benefits include flexible working options, a generous paid parental leave policy, other extended leave entitlements and parent rooms.
