About the role

Reporting to the Geoscience Superintendent, these fixed term roles will be accountable as the Project Geologist is to acquire multidisciplinary Geoscience data and apply their geological expertise to characterise and de-risk the coal resource on operating mines and undeveloped tenements to support key business decisions. This will involve designing and planning of exploration programs and applying integrated interpretation of the geological knowledge to obtain adequate level of resource definition.
The successful candidate will work on a number of challenging geological and coal resource characterisation problems, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and SMEs in Geology, Geophysics, Mineral Systems and Structural Geology.
The role will be responsible for the continual improvement of BHP Coal’s resources characterisation, demonstrating value creation through the application of industry best practice and innovative techniques and will require a motivated and energetic person with the ability to effectively communicate and influence through their technical expertise.

In this role you will:
  • Demonstrate and instill an overriding commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility and sustainable development;
  • Scope Site Long Term and Brownfield exploration activities to define coal resource, minimise geological uncertainties and address resource risk;
  • Actively participate in resource risk assessments to support exploration plan and budget aligned with 5Yr mine plan, LOA and OA;
  • Be responsible for projects from planning to completion, including technical management of third party vendors; 
  • Champion and manage continuous improvement and best practice in the discipline, through internal collaboration with our parts of BHP as well as external engagement with discipline leaders;
  • Upskill staff on understanding applications and limitations of advanced techniques. This will involve training, development of best practice workflows, high quality reporting and communication of deliverables;
  • Proactively engage with stakeholders to maintain alignment with key business objectives and priorities, and to ensure value impact of geological knowledge is maximised; and
  • Collaborate with other SMEs (e.g. mineral system and structural geologists, resource engineers) to deliver integrated project outcomes that seamlessly feed into and add value to the mine planning process.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have:

A Bachelor (B. Sc. App. or equivalent) in Geology or higher degree;
  • More than 5years’ of recent experience in the coal industry with comprehensive undertanding of coal resource characterisation;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of coal logging, sampling and interpreation to tanslate the knowledge to business acumen;
  • Demonstrated technical leadership and experience;
  • A motivated and energetic person with the ability to effectively communicate and influence through their technical expertise;
  • Visible safety leadership;
  • Strong background in operations and supervision of of exploration drill programs.
  • Knowledge and experience of geophysical surveys is advantageous;
  • Frequent interaction with stakeholders within Coal Geoscience, Sites and other BHP stakeholders, requiring the ability to engage with wide range of people;
  • Excellent communication skills to develop and embed best practice workflows and promote knowledge sharing;
  • Proficiency in use of industry common geological and GIS software packages including Vulcan, SKUA GoCad, ArcGIS, Spotfire, Wellcad, Geobank Database;
  • Commitment to engage with stakeholder through site visits; and 
  • Wide-ranging knowledge of current seismic acquisition and processing capabilities.
