About the role

The Manager Health and Safety Environment is functionally accountable for the portfolio of sites in the USA and Canada. In this role the Manager is the single point accountability for Health and Safety Environment reporting to the Head of HSE Projects.  
  • Directly supporting the HSE initiatives and programs under the leadership of the General Manager of Legacy Assets
  • Provide assistance and support with HSE training and actively participate in field leadership planning, execution and coaching
  • Provide Leadership and ensuring the responsibility for safety performance is embedded in the line and focusing on improving HSE capabilities of the Legacy Assets team
  • Ongoing verification of HSE management system and task based critical controls to ensure they are being implemented and executed as designed 
  • Maintain and foster a continuous improvement mindset
  • Coach and mentor teams within the group
  • Provide support for BHP Group and Regional HSE initiatives
  • Provide CEM leadership and actively participate in emergency response drills and review of ERP plans and drills
  • Actively participate in event management and HSE reporting for Legacy Assets
  • Have a comprehensive  knowledge of BHP and industry Health, Safety and Environmental requirements and standards
  • Provide guidance for all HSE related issues
  • Remain independent and objective during times when investigations and assurance  reviews are required
  • Maintain a healthy level of unease and concern about the continual improvement of the management of risks and avoid confirmation bias
  • Identify and develop innovative solutions using the hierarchy of controls to address hazards and thereby demonstrating the active promotion of continual improvement
  • Apply a rigorous approach to performing event investigations, HSE audits and hazard hunts to ensure root causes and key hazards are clearly identified and communicated, with effective controls implemented and actions managed
  • Assist in the prevention of major events  by having a detailed knowledge of safety tools application and Hazard Risk Management Processes


About You

  • Minimum 10 years plus HSE experience in mining and projects  
  • Specialty in closing sites (Reclamation) and metal mining operations 
  • Experience in HSE reporting systems
  • Understanding of HSE regulatory issues. Preferably (MSHA)
  • Risk management and risk assessment skills
  • Safety case process and requirements
