About the role

The Senior HV Operations Specialist will oversee the Port Operations high voltage network and technical projects, where they are required to utilise their experience and technical expertise to influence project outcomes and improve the reliability of the electrical supply.
Reporting to the Superintendent Electrical Infrastructure, High Voltage and Power Coastal team, the responsibilities will include:
  • Ensure conformance with the BHP Charter, the BHP Group Level Documents, Code of Conduct, relevant statutory obligations and internal policies
  • Ensure that all network interruptions are investigated, so as to eliminate repetition, focusing on equipment reliability and availability
  • Facilitate first response for all network interruptions and provide technical support to field staff during the recovery process
  • Contribute to long term network planning and strategy
  • Actively engage and coach field staff to adopt “best practice” when performing high voltage maintenance work
  • Providing effective leadership in managing and developing a strong maintenance team
  • Undertaking continuous improvement initiatives in line with department targets and goal
  • Work effectively with other team members, including contractors, to better understand and manage network and equipment maintenance and resolve problems impacting on both areas.
  • Assist with the Capital, Maintenance and Operations budget formulation and review process
  • Ensure Engineering designs, scopes, reports and other engineering documents conform to BHP and Australian Standards.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with other teams in Port, Rail, NPI and Mining Operations.
  • Drive rigorous methodologies to identify root causes of non-conformance and implement improvement actions
  • Maintaining a high profile in the promotion of safe working conditions and practices so as to ensure a safe  working environment for all employees and contractors.
You will be based at Port Hedland on a residential or fly-in fly-out 8 days on 6 days off roster.  Port Hedland is home to our port and rail operations and is the largest regional centre in North West Australia.   The outstanding facilities at the FIFO villages include; a fully equipped gym, TV lounge and games rooms. Additionally you will have access to the state of the art aquatic and sporting facilities in the town of Port Hedland. All rooms at the villages have their own en-suite bathroom, television, refrigerator and air-conditioning.

About You

The successful applicant will be an expert in their field, achieving positive outcomes through their ability to communicate and influence effectively at all levels, providing technical advice and mentoring and demonstrating strong leadership capabilities whilst influencing a large customer base portfolio.
You will ideally possess some of the following or be interested in developing the following:
  • Tertiary Electrical Engineering qualifications at the Degree level
  • Minimum of six years high voltage experience
  • A clear understanding of Asset Management strategy and execution
  • Understanding of Electrical Australian Standards and legislation (including Electricity Regulations, MSIR, OH&S, Australian Standards)
  • Understanding of high voltage electrical transmission and distribution systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Advanced Computer Systems and Software Skills
  • Project Management experience
  • Minimum of six years post-graduate experience, ideally within the mining sector or a Utilities industry
  • Experience working with High Voltage Systems, in both an operational and maintenance role
  • Root Cause Analysis and other Analytical Techniques (desirable)
  • Knowledge of Maintenance Tactics (desirable)
  • SAP/CMMS Experience (desirable)
