About the role

The Head of Exploration is accountable for management of greenfield exploration activity in Chile, in accordance with approved Exploration and Operations plans.The function is accountable for designing, planning and safely executing exploration programs to simply and effectively test for giant resource potential, from early stage reconnaisance through to Copper Handover or divestment, as defined by the Vicepresident Exploration.  Accountabilities span Target Generation, Recconaissance, Target Definition, Target Testing and Delineation phases, once adequate (porphyry style) mineralization is discovered.   

Responsabilities : 

  • Ensure engagement with our stakeholders and host communities is carried out in accordance to BHP Our Requirements and Minerals America Indigenous People plan
  • Accountable for manage and maintaining the mining concessions in good standing, appropriately filed and registered with all required feed paid to-date and with preferential rights.
  • Accountable for identifying and delivering opportunities (e.g. land to be staked or commercial opportunities) which are judged likely to host one or more undiscovered mineral deposits, which fit within BHP strategy 
  • Provides overall management of the execution of the Exploration activities, ensuring exploration programs are well designed, and adequately resourced.
  • Ensures the integration and co-ordination of all field activities to ensure successful execution of the work program in a safe, environmentally friendly and efficient manner. 
  • As a member of the Exploration leadership team, participates in the development and execution of Exploration strategic plan. Ensures that all issues related to the development of the Chile properties are clearly articulated and examined in the strategic planning process. 
  • Assist in setting and communicate the exploration direction, vision and role accountabilities for Chile to ensure alignment with the exploration vision and strategy for Exploration and the wider BHP.
  • Actively contribute to the overall leadership and strategic development of the Business by providing expertise, advice and recommendations on matters pertaining to the management of Chile exploration program.
  • Ensures that all exploration and operational plans operate according to the established budgets and deadlines established in the strategic and annual operating plan. 
  • Accountable for the implementation and monitoring of the BHP anti-corruption and competition processes and controls. 
  • Accountable for the Risk Management in accordance to BHP Standards and Exploration management system.

About You

  • Geologist with 15+ years of experiencie 
  • Experienced in Greenfield exploration 
  • Bilingual (english/Spanish-preferd)) 
  • Experience leading teams (multicultural and diverse) 
  • Ideal if you have experience in mining property management, community relations and project management as well
  • A track record of success as a highly respected leader in a mining company where he/she has worked in a multi-site environment. Has effectively managed through the entire lifecycle of a project, demonstrating sound exploration judgement, balancing technical, commercial, operational and risk elements.
  • Deep understanding of greenfield discovery exploration value drivers and strategies within specific geography or focus area commodity
  • Has demonstrated an ability to effectively manage resource utilization and prioritize work. Sets goals and measures successes. Sees opportunities, anticipates challenges, analyses risks, stimulates critical thinking, and challenges rationale. Strong planning, scheduling and cost estimation skills.
  • An empowering, collaborative manager. Has demonstrated an ability to recruit, develop, and lead people in the achievement of objectives and goals. Delegates effectively and monitors the team to ensure they have the skills and resources to meet deadlines and commitments. 
  • Able to effectively manages a number of projects simultaneously. A strong multi-tasking capability. Experience managing multiple, large, complex projects simultaneously. Sound knowledge of the project development process and requirement to deliver feasibility studies and develop projects.
  • Understands a company’s fiscal framework, budgeting and capital planning processes. Has a strong sense of accountability for the effective utilization of resources.
  • Able to develop and foster relationships across cultures and with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Has demonstrated an ability to successfully lead geographically dispersed field teams involved in operations and exploration programs. Can keep field teams motivated to deliver on established timelines and operational objectives. 
  • Comprehensive awareness and understanding of environmental responsibilities.
  • Through actions, has demonstrated commitment to integrity, honesty and openness. Self-motivated. Keeps focused on achievement of vision and goals.
