About the role

The Head of Innovation & Commercial Alliances’ primary purpose is to drive commercial outcomes with BHP’s strategic alliances & partnerships which support the delivery of BHP's innovation portfolio, maximising BHP’s competitive advantage and creating shareholder value.
Working closely with the Innovation and Strategic Alliances Team Leads this role will:
  • Implement Strategic Alliance management strategies & programs, in line with Procurement’s Supplier Relationship Management program.
  • Drive commercial relationship alignment, connectivity, capability and social value across BHP’s innovation eco-system (customers, suppliers, community groups, governments, industry peers, education institutions), while prioritising BHP’s Innovation goals.
  • Mitigate risk through effective contracting strategies which protect BHP’s long term commercial competitiveness, data/IP and brand, and support acceleration of Innovation initiatives.


In this role you will:
  • Negotiate and manage commercial agreements for partnerships with various types of organisations (e.g. start-ups, universities, government, NGOs) to develop BHP's step-change and disruptive innovation portfolio across ideation, incubation and execution phases, in line with the endorsed BHP Innovation Strategy.
  • Develop, maintain and own the Commercial Strategy for Innovation that will deliver the scorecard/KPI’s for both Innovation and Commercial teams.
  • Implement the Strategic Alliances Framework (aligned with Procurement’s Supplier Relationship Management framework) to drive large uplifts in value (or manage downside risk) for BHP on a global scale.
  • Engage with the Innovation team, Strategic Partners, Vendors and others to co-create business cases for the Innovation solutions so that they can be commercialised to deliver shared value for BHP.
  • Provide commercial guidance to the Innovation Team’s long term strategies & co-create win:win objectives for the Strategic Alliance partnerships at senior levels, in line with BHP’s Portfolio Strategy & Development (PS&D) plans and Life of Asset plans, and the Product Development life cycles of key vendor partners.
  • Liaise between the various regional teams that interact with BHP’s ecosystem partners (Procurement, Technology, Finance, SPI, Operations) to develop a holistic view and ensure consistency of approach.
  • Lead, coach and build the capability of a global team to create commercial value in a highly ambiguous and complex environment with many stakeholders (internal & external).


About You

The successful candidate will have:
  • A relevant undergraduate degree (e.g STEM)
  • Strong stakeholder management, collaboration & communication (horizontal & vertical).
  • Experience in establishing multi-party partnerships, and commercial frameworks for shared value
  • Understanding of the key value drivers for Innovation, Asset, PS&D, Category, Capital Projects.
  • Domain experience in Innovation or R&D.
  • Strong commercial experience as a Buyer and/or Vendor at senior levels – able to understand the business drivers and internal processes that create value (Profit, Efficiencies, Risk Mitigation) for organisations, and develop strategies which meet the needs of both BHP and external eco-system partners.
  • Disciplined approach to Supplier Relationship Management (SRM), Project & Program Management, Strategic Alliance management, and demonstrated ability to collaborate/negotiate across teams to guide outcomes.  Prioritisation of work program with multiple stakeholders (internal & external).
