Based out of our Potash head office in Saskatoon and under the direction of the VP Project Contracts & Procurement this is an outstanding opportunity to join our team. The role will provide leadership in the implementation of contracting strategies, standards, processes, systems and plans for the program of projects in the region that will ensure the safe delivery of value maximising investments. It will manage the key Project Contracts & Procurement (PC&P) roles and will build capability within the team recognising new ways of working, BHP’s commitment to inclusion & diversity and whilst Health Safety & Environment (HSE) remains a priority, the role will be required to recognise the importance of people’s wellbeing. The role will recognise the importance of relationships with regional counterparts, internal and external stakeholders, partners and society more broadly.

The main duties of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides an overriding commitment to health (including mental health), safety, environment responsibility and sustainable development with relentless focus on lowering risk exposure;
  • Ensures conformance with the BHP Charter, the BHP Group Level Documents, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations;
  • Provides visible and felt leadership as member of the owners’ team.
  • Promotes and facilitates an environment of collaboration and integration.
  • Proactively identifies and addresses roadblocks to project and business. 
  • Proactive and transparent communications, ensuring the right people are informed at the right time. Communication of vision and strategy for accountabilities.  
  • Manages, maintains and governs contracting and procurement strategies, standards,   processes, systems and plans for a program of large, medium and small capital projects;
  • Provides leadership for the development of the contracting and procurement strategies, identifying the preferred types of contracts for the project, considering the project scope and risks;
  • Establishes, maintains and governs an effective and compliant PC&P organization recognizing the new ways of working;
  • Ensures local government and federal government legislation is well understood, and abided by and the team is always updated of any changes;
  • Provides leadership and direction, functional expertise, mentoring, coaching, performance feedback and guidance to the PC&P team whilst fostering a positive team culture; 
  • Identifies, builds and develops talent and capability in PC&P team including a pipeline of talent for key positions;
  • Establishes, maintains and governs capability development plans to ensure appropriately skilled contracts and procurement resources matched to underlying program; 
  • Establishes effective communication channels to encourage collaboration and new Ideas;
  • Establishes, maintains and governs risk and quality management plans to assure effective management of the program’s Contracts & Procurement scope of work;
  • Evaluates key learnings, industry leading practice and innovations in project contracting & procurement to identify opportunities for continuous Improvement;
  • Leads in the identification of programmatic opportunities for capital efficiency and productivity improvements for the Function;
  • Confirms procurement and contracts input to value improvement practices for the program scope;
  • Collaborates with Study & Project Managers to ensure the provision of appropriately skilled contracts and procurement resources, with fit for purpose processes & tools, are available to achieve the project's integrated scope, cost & schedule requirements;
  • Collaborates with Project Centre of Excellence (PCoE) to ensure provision of data requirements for project reporting & control;
  • Collaborates with Project Services to ensure provision of data requirements for project reporting & control.
  • Collaborates with Heads of Functions to ensure alignment of functional standards; 
  • Maintains an awareness of relevant central agreements and/or relationships and ensures that they are appropriately leveraged on the project portfolio;
  • Maintains the interface with the Supply Category Management and Purchasing sub-functions in establishing and executing Contract & Procurement strategies.
  • All of the above must be done in conformance to the BHP Charter, the BHP Business Requirements, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations and in compliance with BHP Group Level Documents and Business Level Documents, with an overriding commitment to health, safety, environment responsibility, and sustainable development.

About You

The successful candidate will have relevant tertiary qualifications, preferably in an Engineering discipline (s), Construction Management, Economics, Quantity Surveying, Legal (Construction Law) or related discipline and extensive contract management experience.  They will possess 15+ years’ experience in Capital Projects as well as a high degree of business acumen with deep understanding of high risk Projects Contracts & Procurement Strategies.  Experience in multi-billion dollar negotiations and deal design is required. 

In addition to the above, the successful candidate will have an understanding and experience in the following: 
  • All the project phases (identification, selection, definition and execution) in the field of Contracting & Procurement;
  • Managing a large portfolio of spend provides a platform to challenge the status quo in a credible and collaborative way;
  • Claims prevention and management;
  • Instinctively knowing what creates value and what levers need to be pushed;
  • Contract management - formation through post award management, claims assessment and management
  • Expertize in negotiation and deal design skills;
  • Managing/supervising a team of Contracts & Procurement professionals
  • Relating well with people with an engaging style, which quickly enables building of trust and strong relationships with stakeholders;
  • Ability to bring people together to gain alignment; 
  • Ability to interface in a global setting and to drive excellence across the PC&P organization.

This role will be based at our head office in Saskatoon (130 3rd Ave South, Saskatoon, SK), but will require frequent travel to our EPCM office in Mississauga (2699 Speakman Drive, Mississauga, ON) and/or the Jansen site (Box 218, Jansen SK, S0K 2B0). 

We offer a competitive compensation and benefits package commensurate with abilities and experience (base salary range is approximately $168,000 - $252,000 per annum). Depending on candidate skills and experience, this role may be eligible for a critical skills allowance of up to 50%. This role is also eligible for a short term incentive of varying amounts.

This role may also be eligible for domestic relocation or a fly in fly out arrangement.
