About the role

The Head of Partnerships primary purpose is to discover and develop opportunities for external and strategic partnerships and associated that support the delivery of BHP's innovation portfolio.

Potential partnership models that this role will consider may include:
·       Research and development partnerships (e.g. with academic institutions, governments);
·       Internal and/or external crowd sourcing programs;
·       Corporate incubator and/or accelerator programs;
·       Cooperation arrangements or other partnerships with other global corporates, including industry peers and/or companies in ancillary industries; and
·       Small Cap Exploration and Extraction companies that have as a core innovative technology and business models. 
·       Other such partnerships as may be appropriate.

Success in the role will be assessed based on the partnerships forged and the internal value derived indirectly from them.

Key Responsibilities:
·       Identify opportunities for partnerships with various types of companies/organisations (e.g. start-ups, universities, government, NGOs) to develop BHP's step-change and disruptive innovation portfolio across ideation, incubation and execution phases, in line with the endorsed BHP Innovation strategy.
·       Work with Innovation program leads to identify demand and develop objectives for external partnerships and alliances, and linking to potential companies/organisiations. Prioritising partnership opportunities in line with the BHP’s Innovation strategy and objectives.
·       Develop and manage ongoing relationships with external innovative companies/organisations in order to create an 'ecosystem' of partners to enable BHP's innovation agenda, in line with the company’s future strategic vision
·       In partnership with Commercial, as well as other Functions such as Legal and Portfolio, Strategy & Development, support the structuring, negotiation and execution of commercial agreements led by the Commercial team.
·       Manage funding for partnerships in line with an agreed funding budget / capital allowance and monitor outputs, roadmaps and risks related to active partnerships and investments made.
·       Support development and promote consistent standards for engagement of external organisations.
·       Engage key stakeholders on innovation agenda, partnerships and investments.

About You

·       10+ years’ experience in sourcing and structuring partnerships and/or investments in early stage highly uncertain innovation activities.
·       A track record of developing and maintaining strong commercial relationships with a wide range of partners across differing industries, research bodies and government bodies.
·       Experience with negotiating appropriate terms and executing partnerships, particularly in global innovation ecosystems. 
·       A background in executing partnerships over their lifecycle and optimizing ongoing management of partnerships (i.e. monitoring).
·       Held exposure to working in and with innovation teams and driving internal innovation strategy.
·       Previous dealings with a broad spectrum of relevant organisations, mining, manufacturing, start-up etc. – knows the ‘lay of the land’.
·       A global network in the innovation landscape relevant to a natural resources company including relationship with the top tier universities globally, top tier Venture Capital funds etc.
