About the role

The Head Of Project Services is accountable for setting direction for the function and provides leadership of Project Services, resources involved in structuring, and controlling the project scope, developing cost estimates, plans and schedules, ensuring that budgets, commitments and actual costs are monitored, changes managed, progress measured and forecasts reported and analyzed to influence on-time and on-budget delivery of the project's objectives.The Head of Project Services is responsible for:
  • Ensure conformance with the BHP Charter, the BHP Business Requirements, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations.
  • An overriding commitment to health, safety, environment responsibility and sustainable development.
  • Acts as the single point of contact with Regional leaders for all matters related to Project Services.
  • Provide strong leadership in developing a high functioning Project Services team aligned with BHP’s values.
  • Actively partners with the line to ensure an effective delivery of Project Services in order to maximize value for the business while promoting an optimized, and standardized deliverable processes.
  • Manages all Project Services leadership roles and sub-functions, including Cost Estimating, Planning and Scheduling, Cost Engineering and Project Controls.
  • Identifies, builds and develops talent and capability in Project Services including a pipeline of talent for key positions.
  • Establishes effective communication channels to encourage collaboration and new ideas.
  • Provides leadership for the implementation methodologies, strategies, systems and functional plans for a program of capital projects, in alignment with group frameworks and strategies.
  • Organize and ensure internal assurance of work is maintained to a consistently high standard.
  • Provides critical functional expertise and advisory support to the Project Manager, Project Director, Program Director or VP Projects to identify key issues and early warning indicators to ensure project meets or exceeds approved business objectives.
  • Maintains oversight to ensure that the latest approaches to Project Services are continuously being reviewed for incorporation into local procedures, systems and functional plans.
  • Collaborates with Global and Regional teams to ensure alignment in key Project Services topics.
  • Manages team priorities, acts as a role model and provides quality feedback and performance evaluations to drive personnel development.

About You

Qualifications
  • Tertiary qualifications in Business (Finance or Accounting Major), Engineering, Quantity Surveying or related discipline; MBA degree is a plus.
  • Certification from AACE and/or PMI, or other related project management favorable.
Skills
  • Strong technical expertise in industry-standard Project Services principles and practices.
  • Ability to engage with & communicate effectively across multiple business units and functional areas.
  • Exceptional productivity that demonstrates reliability in getting the job done accurately and on time.
  • Ability to build and lead strong, cohesive, high performing teams.
  • Experience in planning and leading major changes.
  • Experience in team leadership within a complex organisational context.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills to engage senior external and internal stakeholders as well as reports at all levels.
Experience
  • Roles of successively increasing responsibility in major capital project environment in Project Management or Project Services roles, preferably in Owners team positions.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in managing and delivering across a large and diverse portfolio of projects.
  • Ability to build and lead strong, cohesive, high performing teams.
  • Advanced knowledge of project management principles, skills, and tools.
  • Proven ability to work within a matrix organization.
