About the role

At BHP, External Affairs is a global function spanning Legal, Corporate Affairs, Risk, Ethics & Compliance, Internal Audit, Group HSE and Group Governance. Together, these sub-functions are accountable for work that is recognised as integral to the current and future direction of our Company, locally and globally.    

The Strategy & Planning team works to establish, embed and continuously improve the long-term integrated strategy of the External Affairs function, as well as associated programs of work. Members of our team have a unique and unparalleled opportunity to work across all seven of our External Affairs sub-functions, alongside leading teams drawn from a diverse range of skillsets and geographies.   

In this newly created role, you will report to the Vice President Strategy & Planning and be accountable for leading a global team who are responsible for directly partnering with the External Affairs sub-functions at a regional level to deliver the External Affairs strategy through a step-change in culture, capability and innovation.  

As the Head of Strategy & Planning, you will be responsible for: 
  • Overseeing the embedment of function-wide planning and reporting processes across External Affairs teams – leading a global team who partner directly with sub-functions to support delivery (at a regional level);
  • Consolidating and critically assessing sub-functional planning input and evaluation of data at a global level, providing recommendations to refine and improve the design and implementation of deliverables (including External Affairs strategy, 5 year plan and 2 year budget);
  • Collaborating with peers and senior leaders both internally and externally of BHP to understand and drive opportunities to implement and replicate best practice globally;
  • Driving the regional delivery of function-wide programs and initiatives that continuously improve the culture, effectiveness and efficiency of External Affairs; and
  • Working with peers and leaders to drive consistent expectations, understanding and application of global processes to enable compliance with Our Requirements and ensure the integrity of function-wide processes and systems.

About You

As an experienced and strategic people leader, you have demonstrated success in building and leading strong, cohesive and high performing teams to achieve outstanding business results. Your business and commercial acumen will be key strengths, and you are able to influence peers and senior management with and without direct line authority.
By nature, you thrive working in a fast paced environment and can easily work with stakeholders to synthesise and analyse complex and ambiguous challenges to identify practical solutions across a range of areas.   
Experience coordinating the development and delivery of strategy and planning deliverables within a large global organisation is essential, along with having an understanding of project management and change management disciplines. Your knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies and experience in applying new ways of working (e.g. Agile) is also advantageous.
