About the role

You will be part of a high performing team with exposure to the commercial leadership team and the BHP executive leadership team. The Supply Chain Excellence leader will lead the transformation of Maritime internally and externally:
  • Is accountable for initiation of BHP's first supply chain excellence function and helping the business to deliver innovative maritime go-to market strategies enabled by cutting edge technology.
  • Assures cross functional alignment through working closely with peers within Maritime sub function and across the Commercial function (strategy, planning, marketing and sales)
  • Shapes overall Supply Chain Strategy and manages all supply chain work across the Commercial function that requires Maritime and Supply Chain inputs and strategic advice.
  • Works with peers to assure the Strategy and Planning overall strategy is well adhered to in the sub functional strategy.
  • Working with top executives across the organization to shape and drive strategic agendas and acts as advisor to senior leadership on Maritime strategy.
  • Builds and develops the teams that deliver decision support, automation through simulation and scenario models of the (maritime-) supply chain, must understand high level approach to modelling, supply chain design and optimisation to be able to provide the team with vision.
  • Collection, synthesis, and communication of analytics and insights to drive strategies and decision making for executives

Program Management: Identifies opportunities along the inbound and outbound supply chain and works with commodity leads, procurement, SPI and M&S leadership teams to define and implement business projects.
Safety: Builds strategic relationships with ship-owners that have the same safety and sustainability profile as BHP. Provides support to the teams in maintaining a high focus on the safety component within the supply chain excellence work. Defines future strategies to reduce sustainability risks in the supply chain and continues to advocate innovation and technology to reduce emissions and improve safety.
Cost:Sets the performance criteria, measures performance and provides guidance to the commodity streams to enable them to create competitive advantage for BHP.
Coverage: Defines the success criteria, measures performance and defines the ultimate cross commodity strategies to deliver the business sufficient capacity of vessels to meet all throughput requirements at lowest cost. Works with Marketing and Sales Heads of Strategy and Planning to influence customers to increase their BHP managed freight componentDefines the strategic levers from the annual BHP plan on a page and translates that to the Maritime strategy. Works with the commodity streams to align this with key stakeholders and get approval of strategy by VP M&SCE.Engages with the industry (CCO level) to understand the upcoming vessel supply onto market and negotiate commitment from strategic owners for BHP.
Culture: This role delivers the BHP brand to the industry and drives cultural change in the industry in terms of safety, sustainability and cost transparency. Influences industry relationships to improve safety and sustainability standards and actively participates in forums and conferences that drive improvement in safety standards.
Technology transformation & Digital capability: works with the commodity maritime teams to advocate technology strategy relevant to the business and assures the team embeds digital in their way of working and leverage advanced analytics to deliver competitive advantage and stay ahead of market developments and digital disruption.
Transformational thinking: can inspire the team to lead transformation in the industry and deliver safer and lower cost maritime solutions to BHP. Particular for this role, it is essential to recognize BHP's market position and influence and leverage that to create transparency in markets and drive safety standards to a new level.
Industry leading: thinking forward and can identify trends from signals in market and economy and assure BHP is prepared.
Accountability and ownership mind-set: builds a culture of ownership and inclusion in the team to collaborate with assets and commercial to deliver towards a common goal
Geographical responsibility: Global reach to support all Maritime streams.

Typical strategy projects may involve but not limited to the following topics:
  • Optimize supply chain footprint across different commodities
  • Innovate inbound and outbound supply chains through thought partnering, problem solving, detailed analytics, and strategy forums 
  • Develop sourcing and continuity of maritime capacity across key commodities
  • Analyze key market trends and come up with recommendations to executives
  • Develop route to market strategies with sales, marketing, and product teams
  • Opportunity to drive cutting-edge strategies for one of the industry’s largest Mining companies

About You

Communication and Influence
  • Ability to manage a group of internal key stakeholders to drive strategy development
  • Strong influencing skills and ability to build lasting relationships across multiple layers in the organization and able to gain respect of cross functional organization
  • Excellent communication and synthesizing skills of both written and verbal  
  • Ability to construct global supply chain strategies, influence Procurement, Marketing & Sales and Asset of soundness of the strategy and present this in internal and external forums where relevant.
  • Ability to connect strategy with organisational capabilities, process, sourcing, finance, governance and legal.
  • Establishes effective communication channels and new ways of working e.g. agile to encourage collaboration and new ideas.

  • Strong leadership skills and an ownership mindset
  • Able to coach and develop consulting skills for strategy talents
  • Start-up mentality as this stream has to be set up from ground up, strong influencing and delivery skills.

  • Distinctive problem-solving leadership and analytical thinking
  • Experience in leading supply chain optimisation teams across different modes of transport and different commodities and goods.
  • Experience in inbound and outbound maritime and land freight operations.
  • Strong back ground in commodity trade management, commoditised markets.
  • Strong understanding of shipping demand/supply dynamics.
  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders and lead change.
  • Demonstrated successes in Supply Chain and Logistics strategy development projects
