About the role

The function of the Industrial Communications Engineering Senior Wired Network Engineer is to design, optimise and integrate industrial communications networks, as per the OT communications standards and reference architecture, to ensure designed solutions are delivered into operations with strict adherence to the blueprint. The Senior Wired Network Engineer is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in all aspects of the industrial communications domain including WAN, LAN, Routing, Switching, Firewall and Telecommunications technologies.

Design and develop technical solutions that adhere to OT communications standards, reference architecture and to blueprint in order to address business requirements and implement them through IT change management processes and tools. Implement logical and physical changes as required for project execution in coordination with the Technology Remote Operations Centre (TROC) and site technology teams whilst following safe work instructions.

Actively participate in the development and maintenance of OT communications standards and blueprints. Work with key staff as a level 3 SME in wired network projects. Document high and low level designs, as built documents and maintenance strategies pertinent to delivering wired services into operations. Engage various senior stakeholders, vendors and users in order to build long-term, strategic relationships to assist with the development of solutions that will continue to meet or exceed business needs.

Assist the principal/s and the manager to develop and maintain the life cycle of various network components of a wired network. Assist the principal to review and renew support contracts and engagement with various industry vendors. Lead factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing and commissioning of new solutions as part of operations delivery and handover to support for new services or solutions representing Industrial Communications Engineering.

Actively engage with key staff to develop maintenance strategies to assist the operational teams for wired networking systems in line with business requirements. Manage, maintain and enforce standard documents, specifications, design documents and update the system blue print.

Provide mentorship and guidance to other wired engineers, wireless engineers and Digital Radio System (DRS) engineers within the team to promote a cross skilling and depth of knowledge across all disciplines.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Actively engage in wired communications network related tasks under the guidance of the principal/s, ensuring safe systems of work utilising existing tools, operating standards and work management/service management processes to deliver best of breed designs and solutions while minimising impacts to business continuity
  • Actively participate in the development and maintenance of design blueprints and standards for wired communications networks to maintain Performance, Availability, Security, Safety Critical Communications and OT Applications such as Fleet Management Systems (FMS), drilling operation and process control services.
  • Maintain the end to end wired network design documents and blueprints and ensure that these documents are kept up to date and strictly followed
  • Maintain the ability to travel at short notice to BHP global asset locations (Australia, South America, North America, Canada and Trinidad and Tobago) in order to conduct project related tasks, meetings and training.
  • Conduct and document detailed site survey reports to facilitate the construction of low and high level designs
  • Prepare and deliver in-depth audits for wired communications networks to ensure that relevant technical strategies, policies, standards and practices (including security) are in place and applied
  • Develop and evaluate network performance criteria and measurement methods
  • Identify and resolve systemic quality-related network design flaws and bugs
  • Develop and roll out standards and guidelines for network design and operation
  • Evaluate vendor products and services to insure quality and cost meet company’s needs
  • Develop technical network requirements based on feedback from internal customers, and coordinate with network functional teams to design and implement
  • Support development of engineering solutions for enterprise business opportunities including technical and financial analysis
  • Act as a technical SME for project related issues and drive resolutions to meet SLAs when delegated by the principal
  • Actively engage in identifying and creating corrective / non strategy task lists for reoccurring work to support efficient and effective planning and safe work execution
  • Provide coaching to other team members to ensure knowledge transfer and cross skilled training is embedded within the team
  • Supports the testing and transition of new or enhanced Technology services as assigned by the principal or superintendent
  • Actively participate in the development and maintenance of BHP OT communications standards
  • Provides subject matter expertise to operational support teams to resolve priority issues as required

About You


  • Tertiary qualification in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) field applicable to Telecommunications, Computer Science or IT/OT with at least 5 years professional work experience in a related field.
  • Trade certificate in various transmission and communications technologies, electronic communications / Network Technologies including wired and wireless / safety and critical communication systems
  • ITIL or similar industry best practice tool certification, preferred but not essential
  • IT network certifications (CCNA,CCNP,CCIE - or industry recognised equivalent)
  • Open/unrestricted Cabling Licence
  • Valid Australian C class driver’s license


  • Multi Skilled across IP Network Engineering, Communications and Electronic systems including: WAN, LAN, IEEE 802.3 protocols, TCP/IP, Security, Industrial Ethernet, PoE, VoIP etc.
  • Strong history with leading industrial wired network vendor products and technologies (including Cisco, Siemens, Hirschmann, Garrettcom, Moxa.)
  • Solid technical background in a hosted services environment including infrastructure networks, hardware, software and telecommunications
  • Solid knowledge in using industry standard network monitoring and management tools (Solarwinds, Splunk, Prime etc.) and develop monitoring tool requirements for new services, update or modify existing tools to accommodate newly added elements
  • Ability to perform site surveys and produce detailed reports
  • Familiarity in hosting and infrastructure, virtualization experience using VMWare
  • Familiarity in solar DC power systems (Solar panels, batteries and regulators)
  • Thorough understanding of Cat 5e, Cat 6 and OM3/4 - OS2 fiber optic cabling systems
  • Good understanding of industry cable test procedures and equipment for a variety of different cabling systems (Copper/Fiber test equipment, OTDR, Network analyzer, etc.)

  • Excellent understanding of IP transport network and capability to develop a solution to cater IT/OT applications


  • Minimum of 5 years post qualification experience with one or more of the following technologies: WAN, LAN, IEEE 802.3 protocols, TCP/IP, Security, Industrial Ethernet, PoE, VoIP etc.
  • Hands on experience with Cisco WAN, LAN and industrial switching products including IE and Catalyst switches
  • Experience in performing site surveys of customer environments to determine the pre/post state of a network
  • Experience in optimizing WAN/LAN and other capacity management practices to maximize return on investment
  • Understanding of mining operations and practices
  • Detailed knowledge of tasks related to maintaining complex network systems supporting IT / OT environment
  • Experience running complex performance data analyses and develop KPI optimization plans.
  • Proven track record in delivery of support services.
  • Experience in a large scale and multitenancy network with distributed local area networks in industrial operation
  • Familiarity in 1SAP/SAP Work Management and Service Now Incident Management System
  • Experience in Network troubleshooting, Problem solving and understanding of root cause analysis techniques
  • Exposure to the critical communication systems for operating large processing, mining/heavy machinery
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborated with a small group of internal stakeholders on individual contributor and supervisory level
