About BHP

At BHP we support our people to grow, learn, develop their skills and reach their potential.

With a global portfolio of operations, we offer a diverse and inclusive environment with extraordinary career opportunities.  Our strategy is to focus on creating a safe work environment where our employees feel strongly connected to our values and objectives, and where the capability of our people is key to our success.

About the role

BHP’s Legal function is responsible for providing strategic legal advice to enable the organisation to achieve its commercial objectives and manage legal risk in compliance with applicable laws and consistent with the BHP Charter.

We now have an excellent opportunity for a lawyer to join BHP’s Legal team as a Legal Counsel in Brisbane.  Reporting to the Head of Legal - Coal, Minerals Australia, this is a unique opportunity to utilise your skills and experience with a leading global resources company. This role will provide legal advice and support BHP’s Queensland and New South Wales assets to achieve their goals while addressing commercial and legal risks.

In this role you will be responsible for:
  • Acting as a key adviser and providing independent legal advice to support effective and strategic decision making within the assets;
  • Advising on the applicable regulatory regimes, including State and Commonwealth tenure and regulatory frameworks;
  • Working collaboratively with the Legal and other functions to ensure BHP is appropriately managing legal and other external risks; and
  • Advising in relation to material procurement, regulatory access arrangements and joint venture issues.

About You

You will be a qualified lawyer (minimum 4 years PQE) who is able to practice in Australia and has experience working for a top-tier firm or in-house in a similar role.  As a true strategic adviser, you are able to draw on your experience and strong commercial acumen to solve complex problems and achieve business results.  Additionally, your communication, negotiating and influencing skills will be key strengths and you are at ease in building relationships at all organisational levels.

Occasional site travel will be required.

Supporting a diverse workforce

At BHP, we recognise that we are strengthened by diversity. We are committed to providing a work environment in which everyone is included, treated fairly and with respect. We are an Equal Opportunity employer and we encourage applications from women and Indigenous people.

We know there are many aspects of our employees’ lives that are important, and work is only one of these, so we offer benefits to enable your work to fit with your life.  These benefits include flexible working options, a generous paid parental leave policy, other extended leave entitlements and parent rooms.
