About the role

BHP is a leading global resources company.  Our Minerals Australia Business includes operations in Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia, focusing on iron ore, copper, coal and nickel.

The Legal function is responsible for providing strategic legal advice to enable BHP to achieve its commercial objectives and manage legal risk in compliance with applicable laws and consistent with the BHP Charter.

We now have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and talented lawyer to join BHP’s Global Legal team as a Legal Counsel, in its Perth office.  Reporting to the Head of Legal – WA Iron Ore & Nickel West, this is a unique opportunity to use your legal skills and experience within a leading global resources company. This role will provide legal advice and support to parts of BHP’s WA Iron Ore business to achieve its goals while addressing commercial and legal risks.
With a focus on outcomes not hours, flexible work arrangements will be considered for this position.

  • Acting as a key adviser and providing independent legal advice to support effective and strategic decision making within the BHP WA Iron Ore business

  • Advising the BHP WA Iron Ore business on the applicable regulatory regimes, including applicable Western Australian mining legislation and safety and environmental frameworks

  • Working collaboratively with the Legal function and other functions (particularly the Corporate Affairs team which forms part of the broader External Affairs function)  to ensure BHP is pro-actively and strategically managing legal and other external risks

  • Advising the BHP WA Iron Ore business in relation to key commercial and strategic matters, including joint venture arrangements and tenure strategy

  • Advising on all aspects of the BHP WA Iron Ore business’s non-process infrastructure, including in relation to port, power and housing matters

  • Advising the BHP WA Iron Ore business in relation to material procurement and infrastructure contracts

About You

A true strategic adviser with corporate and front-end contracting experience in the resources and energy sector, you will bring to this role a range of capabilities including strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to work well in a team.  You will have strong commercial acumen and be an excellent communicator (both oral and written) with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels, and be able to resolve complex problems.

To be considered for this role a Law degree and the ability to practice in Australia is essential. Post admission experience of at least 5 years is desirable.
