About the role

The role will be for BHP offshore operations in Trinidad and Tobago

Purpose and Contribution Level:
Responsible for the team of drilling engineers and function of drilling engineering in assigned project or region.
  • Functionally reports to the Head of Drilling Engineering (Conventional) and operationally reports to the Head of D&C responsible for assigned project or region.
  • Experienced in deepwater drilling engineering.
  • Supervises the drilling engineering team in the design and planning of wells and preparation of cost estimates and drilling programs.
  • Accountable for delivery of engineering work, well designs, and well integrity from the team.
  • Leads team in solving technical problems.
  • Manages the interface of the drilling engineering team with the WPT and functions.
  • Focuses the team on continuous improvement and risk management.
  • Role model for professional and ethical behaviour.
  • Coaches and mentors all members of team.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills and vision.
  • Demonstrates developing management skills.
  • Strong collaboration within and outside the team.
  • Develops people through direct supervision and coaching.
Responsible for supervising team in:
  • Well Design
  • Engineering problem solving
  • Cost reduction efforts
  • Maximizing efficiency of operations
  • Ensuring and verifying well integrity
  • Recognition and implementation of industry best practice
  • Compliance with BHP D&C Standards
  • Process and technical improvements
  • Solid understanding of D&C risks and implementation of the Risk Management process.
  • Strong knowledge of industry best practices and involvement in industry standards and organizations.
  • Responsible for team contribution in well containment source control.
Supervises team in preparation of:
  • Well designs which conform to BOWD.
  • Post-well or post-campaign reviews
  • Evaluation of casing seat, load cases, well architecture, and tubing/casing stress analysis
  • Time and cost estimates for input into the AFE
  • New drilling tool technology evaluations and recommendations
  • Drilling input to exploration and development program
  • Ensures that well designs and programs are peer reviewed in accordance with BHP D&C Standards.
  • Reviews and approves well design and drilling programs.
  • Primary point of contact with Supply to work with other DEMs to ensure that inventory is managed to ensure sufficient equipment availability while minimizing excess.
  • Works with service companies to ensure compliance with contracts
  • Ensures that service company Performance Reviews are conducted per schedule.
  • Ensure that AARs and Lessons Learned are captured and implemented in future drilling programs.
  • Encourage personnel and contribute to the identification of opportunities for continuous improvement of systems, processes and practices
  • Ensures retention of critical well records (CEL, tallies, trip sheets, etc.)
Responsible for team:
  • Review of well designs and operational plans at well/pad kick-off meetings
  • Supporting operations on a daily basis, ensuring program is followed, and anticipating potential problems
  • Evaluating requirements for program changes and raising MOCs as required
  • Identifying potential problems and preparing contingency programs as required
  • Making recommendations on improvement opportunities
  • Well handover process.
Supervises team in:
  • Preparation of accurate well time and cost estimates for well and long lead AFE generation
  • Preparation of cost estimates for 5 year plan and 2 year budget
  • Tracking costs during operations
  • Proposing cost reduction initiatives and drives savings
  • Reconciling AFE vs final tracked costs, investigating variances, and updating cost model as required
  • Raising requisitions and approving invoices in a timely manner.
  • Prepares cost estimates for FEED AFE generation.
  • Work with Head of Drilling Engineering, Supply and other Drilling Engineering Managers to ensure sufficient equipment inventory for area of responsibility while minimizing excess.
  • Serve as contract owner as assigned.
  • Supervise engineers in contract ownership as assigned.
  • Supervise Engineers in preparation of scope of work for tender documents and subsequent evaluation.
Quality Assurance:
  • Reviews and approves Quality Plans and ITP’s for Drilling equipment and services for Conventional business.
  • Ensures the FIR process is utilized for QA failures and corrective actions developed and implemented.
  • Ensures that Well Risk assessments are carried out for wells in area of responsibility.
  • Ensures that all MOCs for area of responsibility have the appropriate risk assessment (including barrier assessments if applicable) and are input into the eQIP tool for approval and distribution.
  • Serves as a Material Risk Control Owner and ensure adequate control for assigned Material Risks.
  • Health, Safety, and Environmental:
  • Familiar with BHP HSE standards.
  • Participate in ICAM and other incident investigations as assigned.
  • Participate in Field Safety Leadership program.
  • Regulatory and Joint Venture:
  • Maintains detailed knowledge of regulatory requirements for area of responsibility and ensures compliance.
  • Reviews permit applications for accuracy prior to being submitted. 
  • Liaises with JVP's on planning and operations.
  • Mentors office based Principal Enginners and guide them in technical and professional development
  • Oversees workscope and work of summer interns assigned.
  • Assess performance of each team member and conduct bi-annual reviews.
