About the role

Manager Engineering Operational Data is the link between the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of the applied use of operational data technology at BHP. The role brings operational context to bare in designing, deploying and applying technologies to support the actuation, collection, contextualisation, processing and management of operational data from the control systems, SCADA and next generation IIoT systems for wider use throughout the business.
Duties to include;
  • Manage and provide leadership to a cohesive team of operational data engineers, internal and external experts and contractors, globally.
  • Define and champion the advancement of an operational data engineering discipline, including core skills and services, capability management and embedment
  • Build and maintain key relationships with core operational data users and delivery teams throughout the business
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of operational data technology standards and architecture in line with wider domain architecture, including the definition of artefacts, deliverables, models, processes, roles and responsibilities
  • Comfortably learn and apply a wide variety of modern technologies and tools across rapidly changing environment, including through proof of concepts as appropriate
  • Define, structure and plan work independently, while maintaining alignment across dynamic teams and organization
  • Contribute to the practice talent management, capability growth and development
  • Able to convey information to non-technical colleagues in a concise and clear way 
  • A logical approach to problem solving and complexity disaggregation with solid analytical decision making 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent presentation skills           
  • Strong team based approach to work, offering peer-support and actively participating in ways to aid standardization of knowledge /  skills

About You

With a tertiary degree in a STEM subject (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) you have the capability to inspire, motivate and take teams on a journey to success. You will be able to influence stakeholders and provide positive experiences for your internal customers through your technical knowledge and interpersonal skills. Criteria include;
  • Experience in an Operational, Operations Technology or data engineering/management role.
  • Industry experience in a heavy industry such as mining, oil & gas, utilities or manufacturing (preferred, not essential)
  • Team leadership experience in an operational or operations technology role
  • Conversant with Information Technology and or Operational Technology environments 
  • Demonstrated experience in in implementation and continuous improvement of operations technologies 
  • Experience in Agile, Waterfall and Hybrid Waterfall project methodologies. 
  • A good understanding of ISA95 and other relevant standards
  • Relevant links to industry associations, institutions - universities, to keep informed of emerging technologies 
  • Proven experience delivering Operational Data Management Programs
  • A deep understanding of at least one of the following areas and familiarity with the other areas:  Control Systems, SCADA, Site Historians, Wireless network systems or Fleet Management Systems
  • Real time (telemetry) data management systems
  • Industrial Internet of Things, Edge devices, Integration Process Management
