Our Operations

BHP’s Olympic Dam is one of the world’s largest ore bodies with significant deposits of copper, gold, uranium and silver. With a workforce of around 3,500, the scale of the Olympic Dam orebody means it is a cornerstone of the resource industry and a generational resource for South Australia. The operation is currently in an exciting period of sustainable growth. Through significant investment in infrastructure and with a move into the high-grade Southern Mine Area (SMA), the Olympic Dam operation will underpin jobs and economic development in South Australia into the future.

About the role

Reporting directly to the General Manager Mine, you will become a key member of the Mine Leadership Team (MLT), managing the ongoing operation, improvement and optimisation of the underground mine, one of the largest in the Southern hemisphere. The activities include, the management of drill and blast, raise drilling, loading and haulage and associated support activities supporting in excess of 12Mt of annual material movement. With a number of Superintendents directly reporting into this role and a total workforce, including contractors, in excess of 500, your primary role will be to provide leadership and direction to achieve Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), culture, cost and volume performance, through the effective execution and analysis of production activities.

This is a fantastic opportunity in a senior leadership role within a blue chip organisation.

In this role you will:
  • Be first and foremost focused on creating a culture of care by being a visible safety leader, engaging, developing and coaching your team
  • Own the material Risk Profile for Underground Production and verify material risk critical controls are appropriately designed, deployed and effective
  • Drive the consistent expectations, understanding and application of Production processes to enable compliance
  • Identify, build and develop Production talent and capability.
  • Be accountable for Underground production activities including (all load and haul, drill and blast, raise drilling, production support activities including road maintenance and secondary breakage).
  • Leading continual improvement within the mine production are to lift efficiency and improve operating costs
  • Lead consistently against the Olympic Dam core safety behaviours.
This is an Olympic Dam based position with FIFO from Adelaide or residential options available.

About You

  • Tertiary Degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering or related discipline
  • Extensive experience in underground operations (First Class Managers Ticket will be highly regarded)
  • Sound understanding of Contractor Management
  • A proven ability to effectively manage and engage with a large and diverse work group, support and promote a culture where it is Safe to Speak Up
  • Demonstrate the confidence to lead by example, hold yourself and others accountable and coach others in ‘Safety Leadership’
