BHP Iron Ore is one of the world's leading suppliers of iron ore. The Company's operations currently involve an integrated system of seven inland mines, more than 1,000 kilometres of rail and two separate port facilities; Nelson Point and Finucane Island at Port Hedland as part of our Western Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) business. Reporting to the General Manager Engineering and as a key member of the Engineering and Rail Leadership teams, this is an exciting opportunity for a high performing professional to be a key decision maker and have strong influence across Rail.  

This role is accountable for providing functional excellence in Governance & Technical Stewardship and Modifications & Small Projects for BHP Iron Ore Rail network. As the Manager Engineering, you will provide strategic governance and leadership, and be responsible for coaching and mentoring the site leadership team to achieve the highest standards of safety and productivity across a range of operational functions. You will guide a team in the provision of coaching and technical support to the line, enabling the safe delivery and execution of Projects.
Key Accountabilities will include:
  • Coaching and mentoring your team to achieve the highest standards of safety, environmental performance 
  • Providing strategic governance, leadership for the Rail Engineering team and be an active participant in the Engineering and Rail Leadership teams
  • Overseeing Rail Engineering’s  priorities, ensuring work carried out is directly linked to current business strategy 
  • Coaching and mentoring of direct reports and developing talent pipelines for pivotal roles, including succession planning within the department 
  • Governing compliance with strategy requirements relating to equipment/classified plant, and ensuring changes to the blueprint meet relevant technical standards and safety in design principles 
  • Development and delivery of a strategic capital portfolio.
  • Monitoring and controlling costs associated with capital and operating budgets 
  • Ensuring conformance with the BHP Charter, the BHP Group Level Documents, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations
  • Demonstrating an overriding commitment to health, safety, environment, and sustainable development

To be successful in this role you will have a Tertiary qualification in Engineering and bring a strong understanding of rail project delivery/operations gained in a large scale railroad, mining, heavy industry or logistics environment.

Location 

With this role you will have the choice of either being residentially based in Port Hedland on a 5/2 roster or fly-in fly-out from Perth to Port Hedland on a 5/2 4/3 roster.   BHP supports a flexible work environment and as such, rosters are negiotiable.

Port Hedland is home to our port and rail operations and is the largest regional centre in North West Australia.  The 15,000-strong population enjoys well-established education services, entertainment, sporting, shopping and medical facilities and a strong sense of community.  Its natural harbour handles the largest tonnage of any Port in Australia and its beaches and mangroves are home to an abundance of fish and other wildlife.  Within driving distance are the spectacular Broome, Karratha and Karijini National Park.
