About the role

We are currently looking for an experienced Engineering Technician Mechanical to join our highly motivated team at Nelson Point. This is a permanent, residential position based in Port Hedland on a lifestyle roster. 

As a Mechanical Engineering Technician - Fixed Plant Maintenance, you will be responsible for preventative maintenance and repairs, conducting inspections and performing fault-finding and breakdown maintenance on various heavy fixed plant equipment such as Car Dumpers, Stackers, Bucket Wheel Reclaimers, Ship Loaders, Re-Screening Buildings and various conveying systems to BHP procedures.

Reporting to the C Shift 24/7 Maintenance Supervisor, within the Fixed Plant Port Maintenance Execution team at our Nelson Point Operations, your duties will include:
  • Overriding commitment to the BHP Billiton Charter, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations
  • Safely prioritize efforts to reduce breakdowns and their durations.
  • Facilitate and complete “Whole of job function” tasks, which include preparation of JHA’s, take 5’s, Field Leadership Activities and Work Management practices.
  • Preserve a high level working knowledge of BHP safety processes and procedures.
  • Maintain all aspects of equipment maintenance, including preventative, fault finding, rebuilds, repairs, and commissioning.
  • Perform required work management duties, ensuring all documentation and data entry is accurately completed on time and to a high standard.
  • Accept a high level of ownership of maintenance activities and equipment performance.
  • Maintain a high standard of housekeeping, attention to detail and quality of work.
  • Taking part in reviewing and executing detailed breakdown reports post event, to reduce future downtime.
  • Embracing 5s standards and collaborating with the site BOS team to enhance the CI Process.
  • Collaborating with electrical team members with faultfinding and diagnosing issues as they arise.

Location

In this residential role you will be based in the coastal town of Port Hedland, Western Australia. Port Hedland is home to our port and rail operations and is the largest regional centre in North West Australia.  The 20,000-strong population enjoys well-established education services, entertainment, shopping and medical facilities. 

The excellent sporting and leisure facilities include; a new aquatic centre, sports stadium and water play park. Its beaches and mangroves are home to an abundance of fish and other wildlife.  Within driving distance are the spectacular Broome, Karratha and Karijini national Park. As this is a residential position you will also be provided with subsidised rental accommodation in addition to power and water subsidies.

About You

As the successful candidate you will possess the following:
  • Mechanical Trade Certificate (Mechanical Fitter, Fitter & Turner or Diesel Fitter)
  • Minimum of C class Manual Driver’s License.
  • Experience with safety management systems.
  • Breakdown/Fault finding experience and the ability to display a sense of urgency to complete tasks safely and on time.
  • Experience working with heavy fixed plant.
  • Experience troubleshooting/fault finding hydraulic systems.
  • Capable of working from hydraulic schematic drawings, plans and manuals (Desirable).
  • Demonstrated analytical skills for high level problem solving and sharing of solutions.
  • MSIC, EWP, Forklift, Rigging (Basic), Working at Heights, Senior First Aid and Confined Space training.
