About the role

Purpose Be part of the Portfolio, Strategy & Development (PS&D) team with primary focus on generating new business opportunities aligned with BHP’s strategy for the portfolio, in addition to providing commercial support to the assets. Key Dimensions/ Role Description The Practice Lead Business Development is a key business development execution role reporting to the VP Business Development. In this role, you will
  1. Lead others in BHP’s Business Development team to creatively and proactively identify, originate, evaluate and execute selected opportunities to strengthen and enhance the portfolio and to optimize strategic commercial arrangements in order to add substantial shareholder value.
  2. Support and execute key commercial transactions with the operating assets as required.
We achieve this by developing and maintaining key industry relationships, internal operational asset relationships, developing industry-wide business and market intelligence, driving opportunity assessments, and transaction execution.   Key Relationships Internal:

  Core Accountabilities
  • An overriding commitment to health and safety
  • Generate ideas, develop a pipeline of potential opportunities for M&A and other commercial transactions (coordinates Coveted Asset List), and originate selected opportunities into actionable transactions
  • Develop business development themes in collaboration with internal strategy teams and provide real-time industry feedback to refine strategy
  • Supports execution of M&A transactions, including leading relevant work streams and providing overall commercial / strategic stewardship of M&A transactions originated from BD. In some cases, manages the overall transactions for divestments and acquisitions
  • Identifies and leads opportunities for improvement in major commercial arrangements (ie greater than $50M and of high complexity and / or strategic value) and undertakes negotiation of major agreements, where relevant, integration with business, or other reasons.
  • Build strong relationships with key industry participants, advisory investment banks and other stakeholders
  • Where relevant, provides PS&D support and liaison to the Exploration team on early stage business development opportunities.
  • Provide support and influence Asset strategy development to recommend portfolio related business strategy whether it be grow, harvest or sell
  • Provide thought leadership on a broad range of commercial issues to support the global Petroleum business
  • Be an assignment leader for the PS&D resource pool
  • Represent BHP at industry events and capture relevant insights and opportunities that can be fed back to broader PS&D team

About You

  • Relevant Engineering and/or commercial tertiary qualifications
Experience & technical competencies
  • Global industry experience including a range of roles and responsibilities in technical and commercial arenas
  • Extensive network of contacts in the industry
  • Transaction experience in an investment bank or corporate
  • Experience in leading multidisciplinary teams with proven ability to achieve high quality outputs in a timely manner
  • Effective communications skills with experience preparing for, presenting to and influencing Senior Management and the board
  • Technical knowledge expertise (theoretical & practical) with particular focus on the areas of valuation methodology & practices, due diligence and risk assessment
  • Experience in engagement and management of external service providers and external third parties such as investment banks, independent experts, and financial advisers.
Non- Technical Competencies
  • Stakeholder management skills especially with other subject matter experts, project & company management teams and externals/counterparties
  • Ability to mentor and coach members of the resource pool
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple transactions and other responsibilities effectively
  • Strong desire to pursue and achieve excellence and consistent high performance
  • Prepared to travel domestically and internationally
  • Must be able to communicate in English
