About the role

The primary purpose of this role is to assure the technical quality of the geophysical work at BHP Petroleum. The applicant will be a member of the Subsurface Technical Assurance and Capability (STAC) team, a multi-disciplinary team of geoscientists and engineers whose main role is to provide technical assurance for critical subsurface work streams.  In addition to formal assurance, the STAC team provides technical feedback and guidance to project teams across the petroleum value chain.  While the applicant will be a subject matter expert with industry recognition in geophysics, broad subsurface integration skills are required.

This is a grade 14 role. The primary focus of this role is discipline lead across Petroleum.

In this role you will:
  • Provide technical leadership for petroleum geoscience in geophysics and contribute in a lead advisory role to the professional/technical direction and strategy
  • Represent the assurance team as the primary responsible person for assurance related to geophysical acquisition, processing, analyses, and interpretation
  • Assist the subsurface function and business management in setting strategic direction, particularly in the deployment of standards and workflows
  • Think strategically and work with other stakeholders to Ddevelop and promote new best practices and guidelines for geophysics
  • Mentor staff of all experience levels across Petroleum
  • Contribute to the direction and strategy for BHP’s recommended internal and external geoscience training
  • Assist the function and business management in setting strategic direction, particularly in the deployment of workflows
  • Work with Strategy & Innovation (S&I) to develop/adopt/deploy key geophysical technology
  • Represent, in partnership with S&I, BHP’s technology efforts and hold key external relationships with geophysical companies/institutes


About You

  • PhD or MSc Degree in Geophysics
  • A minimum of 20 years of experience in across the petroleum value chain, including  exploration, appraisal, and production is preferred
  • Functional Experiencedepth in petroleum geophysics: deep understanding of how geophysics contributes across the petroleum Subsurfaceindustry, across the various sub-disciplines of geophysics, namely data acquisition, processing, analyses, and interpretation. 
  • A deep understanding and skilled application of how the various geophysical methods (Seismic, Potential Fields, Remote/Satellite sensing, Borehole-based methods).
  • An expert with recognized external reputation in geophysics (mastery in one or several sub-disciplines of geophysics).
  • Problem solving: demonstrated analytical thinking to resolve issues in a variety of complex settings
  • Integration: ability to integrate geophysics into all interpretations of exploration, appraisal, development, and production scenarios.
  • Sustained performance/track record: recognized for making high-level contributions. Adds value through insightful and proactive contributions to projects and/or operations in varied and different settings or environments
  • Sphere of Influence: effectively networks and influences across functions and teams and internal and external to BHP, including external vendors, consultants, contractors and academia
  • Good understanding of industry abilities in your area of expertise
