About the role

This is a strategic and highly visible role, reporting to the Head of Geoscience Excellence within our Global Technical Centre of Excellence. The successful candidate will be instrumental in defining and influencing global leading practice and leading transformational innovation in the understanding and application of geophysics to remotely sense, image and interpret the subsurface to aid the discovery, appraisal and extraction of mineral resources.

As a trusted Advisor and Subject Matter Expert, you will have the opportunity to drive the following activities:
  • Global thought leadership in the understanding of subsurface imaging and integrated interpretation of geology-geophysics within and external to BHP.
  • Development of the awareness and capability of BHP geoscientists in the application of integrated geology and geophysics to resource exploration and extraction.
  • Development and maintenance of standards in the acquisition, processing and integrated interpretation of geophysical data.
  • Building of trusted relationships with exploration and resource characterisation teams within BHP assets.
  • Identification of key knowledge gaps in the ability to integrate geology and geophysics to image and quantitatively model the subsurface and maintenance of research roadmaps to influence allocation of resources to research and development initiatives.
  • Influence, Lead and Manage Fundamental Geoscience research to address knowledge deficiencies identified collaboratively with assets and functional peers within BHP and with thought leaders external to BHP.
  • Identify and facilitate the appropriate transfer of petroleum geophysical methods into the minerals domains
  • Promoting BHP as leaders in integrated geology-geophysics to the external technical community, including universities, research institutions and professional organisations.

About You

Highly respected and globally networked Professional with a reputation built upon scientific depth and breadth, academic leadership, subject matter expertise and innovation. With your ability to build strategic and collaborative partnerships and lead change across both academic and industry communities, you enjoy playing an integral role in influencing the research and application of applied geophysics.

In addition, to be successful in this role, you will ideally possess the following:
  • Tertiary qualification in Geoscience. Postgraduate degree (MSc/PhD) in geophysics.
  • A deep technical understanding of fundamental geophysics, including mag/grav, EM and seismic methods, petrophysics and integration of geology-geophysics.
  • Extensive experience in geophysical modelling and quantitative inversion.
  • Significant application of geophysics and integrated geology-geophysics interpretation to exploration for or development of mineral or petroleum resources across a range of commodities, deposit types and geological terranes.
  • Demonstrated involvement in teams achieving innovative breakthroughs in understanding or applying geophysics to constrain geological models.
  • Demonstrated business acumen in the application of geophysics to influencing business decisions in the exploration for or development of mineral resources.
  • Credibility as a Thought Leader with an extensive network in industry and academic technical communities, and evidence of technical thought leadership in influencing research directions.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • A passion for mentoring and coaching geoscientists.

You will be based in Perth, Western Australia, in the multi award winning office tower - ‘City Square’.
