With a global portfolio of operations, we offer a diverse and inclusive environment with extraordinary career opportunities.  Our strategy is to focus on creating a safe work environment where our employees feel strongly connected to our values and objectives, and where the capability of our people is key to our success. Come and be a part of this success.

About the role

This is a strategic and highly visible role, reporting to the Head of Geoscience Excellence within our Global Technical Centre of Excellence. The successful candidate will be instrumental in defining and influencing global leading practice and transformational innovation in the delivery of risk-based geoscience models of the subsurface to inform the entire life cycle of resources, from resource definition through to mine closure.

As a trusted advisor and subject matter expert, you will have the opportunity to drive the following activities:
  • Global leadership in the design of geoscience inputs to estimating and delivering risk-based resource and reserve models to inform decisions throughout the entire resource value chain (including resource estimation, extraction, processing, marketing and closure) within and external to BHP.
  • Development of the awareness and capability of BHP geoscientists in the design and delivery of geoscience models, with quantified uncertainty, to inform business decisions throughout the resource value chain.
  • Development and maintenance of standards for the development and delivery of probabilistic resource models that inform the entire value chain.
  • Building of trusted relationships with and between BHP exploration/access, appraisal and Planning and Technical groups, and developing strong interdisciplinary links between geoscience and other disciplines in the mining value chain (e.g. mine planning and engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology, process engineering, tailings engineering)
  • Identification of key knowledge gaps in the ability to integrate geoscience data into effective risk-based resource and reserve models and maintenance of research roadmaps to influence allocation of resources to research and development initiatives.
  • Influence, lead and manage fundamental geoscience research to address knowledge deficiencies identified collaboratively with asset or functional peers within BHP.
  • Promoting BHP as leaders in integrated resource characterisation to the external technical community, including universities, research institutions and professional organisations.

About You

Highly respected and globally networked professional with a reputation built upon scientific depth and breadth, leadership, subject matter expertise and innovation. With your ability to build strategic and collaborative partnerships and lead change across a range of disciplines, you enjoy playing an integral role in delivering quantitative knowledge of the subsurface through the entire mining process.

In addition, to be successful in this role, you will ideally possess the following:
  • Tertiary qualification in geoscience. Postgraduate degree (MSc/PhD) in geoscience or resource engineering fields.
  • Extensive application of geoscience throughout the resource value chain, from resource delineation through to closure, involving integration of geoscience with mine planning, extraction and mineral processing teams.
  • A deep technical understanding of ore deposit geology, resource modelling, integrated interpretation of multiple geoscience datasets (geology, geochemistry, geophysics, structure) and the impact of geology throughout the mining value chain across a range of commodities and ore deposit types.
  • Demonstrated involvement in teams achieving innovative breakthroughs in modelling geology and delivering geoscience understanding to other mining disciplines.
  • Demonstrated business acumen in the application of geoscience to influencing business decisions in the development of mineral resources.
  • Credibility as a Thought Leader with an extensive network in industry and academic technical communities, and evidence of technical thought leadership in influencing research directions.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • A passion for mentoring and coaching geoscientists.

You will be based in Perth, Western Australia, in the multi award winning office tower - ‘City Square’. You will have stunning river views from your modern open plan office, state of the art facilities including virtual whiteboards and video conferencing facilities, 550 bicycle racks with ample lockers, showers and change room amenities and a large outdoor terrace with barbecues.
