Come and be a part of this success.

About the role

In this role, you will be responsible for the research and development of innovative mathematical and computer science algorithms, used within a multitude of applications. This role suits someone not afraid of a challenge, with a real enthusiasm for problem solving and an interest in Industrial data. We are looking for an experienced applied mathematician at a principal level, or someone looking to make a step-up from a senior level role. The hiring manager is also considering candidates with less experience, but with an excellent attitude to learn and grow as an engineer.   Reporting to the Operations Research manager, your key accountabilities will include:
  • Working with other team members on the development of complex mathematical and computer science algorithms for research exploration and planning, mine planning, supply chain and low emission technology based initiatives.
  • The design and prototype of machine learning, deep learning, data fusion, simulation and/or large scale optimization algorithms based on real-world data.
  • Contribute in the development of software implementations of the models and algorithms to assist in applying advanced mathematic techniques that improve decision making within the operations.
  • Research and development of new technologies which will help to contribute to the next generation of advanced mathematical and computer science models used within the group.
  • Communicate research results effectively through presentations and publications in academic and industry conferences.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will be have a strong background in applied mathematics and excellent scientific computing skills, including creativity in the design and development of efficient algorithms. You will have experience implementing algorithms as computer code using object orientated languages (C#, C++, Java, Python etc), being able to work independently with a problem solvers mind-set.

The successful candidate will also have a PhD in a Quantitative field (Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Data Mining, Computer Science, Mathematics, Applied Statistics etc), and have experience working on large scale industrial applications. Candidates without a PhD but with strong industrial backgrounds will also be considered. You will get a real buzz about solving a variety of problems, enjoy a challenge and adapt to all different kinds of mathematics.

As the preferred candidate, you will have knowledge of parallel programming, supply chain management/network optimisation applications and experience with implementing and tuning meta-heuristic algorithms (Ant Colony, Bee Colony, VNS, genetic algorithms, local search etc). Experience with pattern programming and simulation using any logic also looked on favourably.

Crucially, you will be a strong team player and willing to share ideas and collaborate with other team members.

Supporting a diverse workforce

At BHP, we recognise that we are strengthened by diversity. We are committed to providing a work environment in which everyone is included, treated fairly and with respect.
