About the role

You will be part of an energetic team that is focused on developing and delivering the implementation and sustainability strategies of automation systems in the heavy haul industry.  This is a highly collaborative environment in which the successful candidates will work with multiple teams to create technology and operational readiness, deliver commissioning practices, and identify methods to improve capability of autonomous systems. In addition to that, be part of guilds and strategic groups to develop standards that will allow us to successfully replicate the outcomes of solutions to other assets of the company. Reporting to the Manager Capability and Commissioning, your key accountabilities will include:
 
Sustainable Development, HSEC and Business Conduct:
  • Ensure an overriding commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
  • Ensure conformance with the GLD’s, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations.
  • Provide leadership at Operational Sites and NPI locations in respect to safe systems of work. Ensure all on-site work adhere to operational requirements such as management of change, permits to work, training, site supervision, field leadership, etc. and that risk assessments are identified and completed.
  • Oversee the practices that ensure compliance with the requirements of mines safety acts and/or regulations in accordance with the relevant country, state, region or county.

Automation – Project Development and Delivery:
  • Work with line customers to identify and understand the business requirements and translate into approved scope of work for Technology to address
  • Define the value proposition for the investment and define and measure the key value drivers to ensure project is value accretive
  • Develop cost effective, operable, maintainable and supportable automation solutions that address business problems and integrate with other existing/future business systems
  • Adhere to and help improve automation standards and controls
  • Identify and assess technical risks associated with systems and decision automation specific to assigned project/s 
  • Ensure that framework and automation controls are designed into solution requirements and systems architecture is automation enabled
  • Align with relevant intellectual property management plans
  • Provide expertise to assist prioritising and defining the delivery strategy of projects
  • Assist Operational leadership teams to lead organisational change
  • Manage assigned budget effectively and ensure the costs for execution are competitive within the industry and the projects are delivered to budget, schedule and outcomes achieved as per stakeholder expectations

Automation - Capability:
  • Compliance with Systems Engineering framework and standards
  • Defines and maintains the operational blueprint for equipment and decision automation best practice
  • Completes or coordinates technology readiness activities for projects
  • Completes or coordinates operational readiness activities for E&D automation.
  • Maintains operational benchmarks and insights into productivity and cost improvements.
  • Maintains operational benchmarks for projects and BAU uplift of existing deployments.
  • Defines training outcomes for project trainers to deliver as part of operational readiness
  • Defines best practice operational and automation readiness governance and application into projects.

Automation – Commissioning
  • Compliance with Systems Engineering framework and standards
  • Defines best practice commissioning governance into projects.
  • Support projects in the development of commissioning strategies/plans and the delivery of commissioning

Team Management:
  • Oversee the performance of reports with regular mentoring and support to further develop their ability to manage their respective domains; maintain replication projects portfolio and reporting.
  • Develop internal competence, subject matter experts and technical expertise to enable sustainable outcomes for BHP
  • Reporting - ensure the preparation of project reports as required. Work to ensure that all reports are accurate, comprehensive and lucid and will ensure the credibility of the project/s.
  • Organise and run forums and guilds to ensure continuous improvement and elevate the quality of work
  • Create and maintain partnership with universities and start-ups to bring in new ideas and diversity of thought to the team
  • Perform quality assurance of deliverables

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have substantial experience (8+ years) in relevant engineering or technology roles, ideally within mining, oil and gas, utilities or manufacturing. You will have 3+ years experience in project delivery or consulting roles and possess full lifecycle exposure. Solid experience in Agile, Waterfall and Hybrid project methodologies will be advantageous. Any applicable post-graduate qualifications such as a Masters in Automation would be highly regarded, and a tertiary qualification in Engineering, Information Systems or related discipline is desirable. Familiarity across standard computer software practices including development and vendor (COT’s) assessment methodologies is essential. Knowledge of systems engineering principles and test and evaluation methodologies is advantageous.    

As the preferred candidate, you will have outstanding interpersonal, communication and presentation skills and the ability to influence stakeholders across all organisational levels. You will be a resourceful and collaborative problem-solver who can deal with complexity and distil key issues from a variety of stakeholders. Your ability to manage and prioritise multiple tasks, projects and stakeholders simultaneously will be critical. As the main change agent, you will be confident in managing user expectations, dealing with diverse groups, and driving improvement initiatives. Your ability to lead and motivate cross-functional and multi-discipline teams will be significant.
