About the role

Automation is changing the way we deliver technology solutions and we now require a new principal to help drive the use of automation within the technology function. As the Principal Automation, you will be providing automation direction and leadership with focus on collaboration, communication and support. You will help drive automation solutions that are scalable, robust, replicable and supportable.

Reporting directly into the Manager Technical Automation this role has responsibility for defining the automation strategies, processes, tools and platforms for the BHP Technology landscape. This is a global role encompassing both IT and OT technologies across all assets and global operations.

Key accountabilities include:
  • Provide advisory and guidance to teams on use of automation technology.
  • Working with key stakeholders across Technology to develop and enhance strategy and standards for automation processes, tools and platforms.
  • Management and support of the tools and platforms.
  • Oversee automation engineering and development activities
  • Design and embed effective maintenance plans for these platforms
  • Seek to increase the use of automation within BHP Technology and proactively seek opportunities to automate;
  • Driving on-boarding and adoption of our core automation tools and services;
  • Maintain and create knowledge repository for automation tools and platforms.
  • Continuously learn and teach others existing and new technologies;
  • Manage technical relationships with system integrators to support complete system delivery on cost, schedule and quality.
  • Assist leadership team to drive and lead organisational change

About You

We are looking for technologists passionate about automation.

Key criteria include: 
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the IT industry. 
  • DevOps / Software Development Experience 
  • Scripting experience: Bash, Shell, Python and/or PowerShell;
  • Experience implementing build configuration tools, such as Puppet / Ansible;
  • Knowledge of or experience with Event Management and monitoring tools;
  • Knowledge of or experience with Orchestration Engines and Automation Workflows;
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Good understanding of ITIL and related processes.
  • Working knowledge of software development methodologies including code profiling, regression testing and continuous integration;

  • STEM degree is essential
  • Agile, DevOps or other relevant Technology Industry Certifications beneficial
  • Further postgraduate qualifications related to technology well regarded
