About the role

Queensland Coal comprises the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) and BHP Mitsui Coal (BMC) assets in the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland, Australia. 

BMA is Australia’s largest coal producer and supplier of seaborne metallurgical coal. BMA is owned 50:50 by BHP and Mitsubishi Development. BMA operates seven Bowen Basin mines (Goonyella Riverside, Broadmeadow, Daunia, Peak Downs, Saraji, Blackwater and Caval Ridge) and owns and operates the Hay Point Coal Terminal near Mackay.

BMC owns and operates two open-cut metallurgical coal mines in the Bowen Basin – South Walker Creek Mine and Poitrel Mine. BMC is owned by BHP (80 per cent) and Mitsui and Co (20 per cent).

New South Wales Energy Coal consists of the Mt Arthur Coal open-cut energy coal mine in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, Australia. The site produces coal for domestic and international customers in the energy sector. 

About the role


We are currently seeking applications from experienced Cost Engineers. You will be involved in cost engineering throughout the whole project life cycle from identification (pre-feasibility) through to execution of capital projects ranging from $20M to $1B.

This is an exceptional opportunity to bring your skills in-house and contribute to the success of a portfolio of highly visible projects with BHP.  This is an analytical role, and will evolve and mould to business requirements in order to support the various stages of project development.


Key responsibilities of the role include:
  • Ensure consistent processes, standards and practices are applied for cost engineering across assigned portfolio of projects
  • Implement project control budgets from approved estimates, schedules and project execution plans
  • Facilitate and drive robust change management
  • Review, revise and trend forecasts and cash flows
  • Perform analysis and reporting to influence on-time and on-budget delivery of the project
  • Provide cost engineering expertise and support to ensure the optimum delivery of assigned project/program of projects;
  • Identify and implement cost engineering improvement initiatives.
  • Guide and coach project personnel on the requirements and implementation of cost engineering principle
  • Day to day transactional tasks including processing purchase requisitions in SAP; data entry; reviewing and endorsing contractor claims as well as managing accruals

About You

  • Degree qualified in Engineering, Project Management, Commercial or a related field
  • Experience in resources capital projects, construction, infrastructure of heavy industry
  • Strong experience working as a Cost Engineer throughout the whole project life cycle of capital projects
  • Ability to influence, engage with & communicate effectively across multiple business units and functional areas
  • Expertise in key business systems, including 1SAP, EcoSys, PRISM, etc. as well as an expert user of Excel
  • Experience coordinating change management, ensuring robust capturing of trends and changes
  • Effective stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • Experience or familiarity with planning and scheduling (P6) would be beneficial
