About the role

The Data Strategy team sets the strategic direction for Data across all of BHP and implements business and technical frameworks that maximise the value that data creates, and the speed at which the business can make use of it. Within this team, the Principal Data Quality & Governance role is business-focused and drives cross-business designs and structures for quality, accessible and trustworthy data.
Key activities include:
  • Work primarily within a region of BHP to understand the important business data that creates value, and support the appointed business Data Owners to improve and sustain the quality of this data. This work includes modelling the business data domain and supporting the development of data definitions and data quality standards that together make up BHP’s global data catalogue.
  • Engage with Business leadership to understand deviations from data management standards, with business process and technical actions to remediate
  • Report on compliance to data management standards
  • Support Technology projects and Digital Factory initiatives to align data requirements against the enterprise-wide business data model with data quality standards consistently developed and documented, ensuring trustworthy data through data lineage
  • Ensure data quality standards prioritise and represent “critical data elements” that maximize business value creation and manage data related risks.
  • Drive capability excellence across the Data Management Community of Practice
  • Work with the BHP Business Data Catalogue (e.g. Collibra) to assist with the capture and sharing of data context, definition and quality.

About You

Technical Competencies:
  • Strategic thinking, analysis and problem solving: Ability to structure and assess complex design problems and priorities, and structure business data requirements that can support their resolution and or value-creation.
  • Emerging technologies: Broad awareness and understanding of emerging data technologies and services, and ways of working with business data
  • Executive and technical communications: Ability to draft senior stakeholders level briefings and communications that concisely articulate the strategic priorities and new ways of working with data, representative of BHP’s Data Strategy
