About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a proactive, dynamic and highly astute professional to join the BHP NSW Energy Coal (NSWEC) Finance Team. This role is based at our Mt Arthur Mine Site in the beautiful Hunter Valley region of NSW. As a Principal Finance Business Partner, you will be a key member and influencer of the Site Lead Team. You will provide specialist financial advice, develop relationships with site leadership and operational personnel and build financial acumen in the Asset. You will create value through improving the quality of business decisions, through analyzing financial data, options and valuing opportunities to enhance business outcomes.  Occasional travel to the Brisbane and Newcastle offices to meet with key stakeholders is a requirement. 

Specific responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Finance Business Partnership (NSWEC & BMC), your key responsibilities will be:
  • Finance business partnering for NSWEC – Influencing and challenging the teams in cost control and productivity, capital allocation and efficiency and continuous improvement
  • Influence and participate at the Mt Arthur Operations Lead team meetings, providing financial insight, value coaching and business acumen to decision making
  • Engage with operational teams to identify, advise and evaluate productivity and value creation initiatives
  • Review monthly cost outcomes to ensure accuracy;
  • Delivery of the annual two year budget and five year plan financial submissions with supporting analysis.
  • Review and Approve business case development and investment evaluation on operational capital and continuous improvement projects
  • Ad-hoc analysis and development of tools and reporting to communicate hypotheses and financial recommendations
  • Coach and build business acumen with key stakeholders in financial knowledge and the use of information systems to determine cost and budget outcomes and to improve understanding of financial implications of decision making
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration through working with a number of stakeholders from operations, other functions (Supply, Asset Projects, Engineering, Risk, Human Resources, Technology) and the wider Global Finance Function such as Planning & Analytics, Accounting & Reporting, Tax and Investment Evaluation.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for the continual improvement within the department

About You

You may be an experienced finance professional, or a technical/engineering specialist with strong commercial acumen and some finance exposure. Your strong engagement and influencing skills will ensure you can work effectively with a range of stakeholders, and will enable you to build and maintain relationships. You are an enthusiastic, confident self-starter who is able to work independently and as part of a team. Strong attention to detail will be critical to your success, as will your ability to achieve deadlines and problem solve. Previous mining experience is not required.
