About the role

BHP is in search of a Principal Geotechnical Engineer, who can play an integral regional role in our planning and technical processes. Primarily located at Santiago office, you will have the opportunity to work across multiple sites and projects supporting the different BHP Assets and No Joint Venture operations. You will have the flexibility with living local in a residential while other work arrangements open for discussion to ensure you enjoy a highly desirable work-life balance.You will report to the Regional Practice Lead of Geotechnical and Hydrogeological. You will support the BHP Assets in the implementation of Global/Regional standards, best practices transfer/replication, benchmarks, lessons learned and amongst other related activities, which enables optimized and de-risking mine plans for execution and projects.

You will also be responsible for the following:

  • Promote and contribute to regional continuous improvement in geotechnical engineering including strategy, risk management, and value;
  • Development of standards and guidelines, promote their implementation across the business, and provide assurance and influence;
  • Contribute to the development and execution of a 1st Line of Defense assurance program against the Global and Regional Geotechnical standards;
  • Manage mine geotechnical risks and controls across T&S, under support and direction of the Regional Practice Geotechnical through;
  • Active participation in the development of an internal and external network of geotechnical professionals, and promote a culture of excellence and continuous improvement as a trusted advisor across BHP Region.
  • Provide expert advice for independent Peer Reviews and other reviews as required;
  • Participate as a member of ICAM and IPR process.
  • Contribute to the Technology Roadmap for Geotechnical, including management and/or support for relevant innovation and technology research and initiatives internally and externally;
  • Represent BHP in global industry initiatives such as LOP (Large Open Pit Project) and/or Cave Mining 2040;
  • Facilitates global rollout of identified internal best-practice in geotechnical characterization, design analysis, modelling and monitoring; and
  • Facilitates ongoing development of geotechnical management practices through external benchmarking and Continuous Improvement.

About You

We have a strong focus on finding candidates with the right values, leadership, collaboration and communication skills.  Your strong stakeholder engagement will foster collaborative working relationships across our Operated and Non-Operated Assets, as well as regional and global technical teams. In addition to demonstrated leadership capability, you will have the skills and knowledge to provide critical thinking and a solution-focused attitude.  The ability to communicate effectively across disciplines and organisational levels to create buy-in and influence outcomes will be highly regarded.

  • Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Greater than 10 years’ total experience in underground and open pit mining, mine services and/or consultant companies.
  • Geotechnical software analysis skills.
  • Experience (leading or participating) in geotechnical review processes and consultant management, for projects and/or operations.
  • English is required at intermediate level and Spanish at advanced level

  • Diploma in Hydrogeology, Geophysics, Geological Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering; Geosciences Areas.
  • Postgraduate degree (MSc/PhD) in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Experience in similar corporate roles in mining companies, consultancy or mine services companies.
