About the role

Up to 75% or more Domestic and International (Canada) Travel 
Roles and Responsibilities
  • The purpose of the Principal H&S role is to influence and improve H&S culture and performance by:
  • Focusing on H&S Leadership coaching – ensuring the responsibility for safety performance sits with line leadership and assisting in improving capabilities
  • Ongoing verification of H&S Management System and Jobsite Task based critical controls to ensure they are being implemented as designed 
  • A continuous improvement mindset to learn and improve
  • Coach and mentor colleges within the group
  • Working with projects leadership team and achieving aligned between projects needs and HSE expectations
  • The Principal H&S must participate in the planning, assessment of risk, identification of controls and monitoring of high risk activities. To effectively succeed in the role, they must:
  • Provide functional expertise and H&S support in close alignment to the BHP charter and recognized industry best practice
  • Interpret and apply region specific legislation, understand codes of practices and industry standards
  • Monitor, record, and review all H&S performance against H&S objectives, while actively identifying key areas for continual improvement
  • Liaise and build an effective rapport with all site personnel to promote a visible and pro-active risk-based approach to H&S management
  • Observe workplace activities to raise the quality of H&S input and risk management, while adopting a governance role to check compliance with site and operational requirements
  • Intervene when job plans or actual task are not going to plan or risk profile changes
  • The Principal H&S will utilize their interpersonal skills, extensive safety knowledge, and experience to make a significant contribution to H&S performance. They will:
  • Act as a leader and support BHP Leadership Initiatives
  • Have a detailed knowledge of BHP Petroleum and H&S standards
  • Be assertive, pragmatic, solution driven and lead by exemplary behavior through consistent and clear communication to all levels of personnel
  • Influence by building relationships and mentoring personnel while providing guidance for all H&S related issues
  • Identify hazards and develop innovative solutions using the hierarchy of controls to mitigate such hazards and thereby demonstrating the active promotion of continual improvement
  • Remain independent and be prepared to stand alone when situations require it
  • Maintain a healthy level of skepticism and concern about the management of risks (Chronic Unease) and avoid confirmation bias
  • Assist in the prevention of major events by having a detailed knowledge of safety tools application and Hazard Risk Management Processes and actions to take in situations where normal safety controls have been downgraded
  • Apply a rigorous approach to performing incident investigations, H&S audits and hazard hunts to ensure root causes and key hazards are clearly identified and communicated, with effective controls implemented and followed to closure

About You

Qualifications (combination of)
  • Occupation Health and Safety Degree, mining related or engineering degree
  • H&S certification (BCSP: CSP, SMS, OHST, CHST) accreditation
  • Audit qualifications
  • Heavy civil, mining and construction projects HSE Management preferred
Experience & Technical Competencies (combination of)
  • Minimum 10 years plus H&S experience in mining, heavy civil construction, projects
  • MSHA and OSHA regulations expert
  • Experience in H&S reporting systems.
  • Understanding of local H&S regulatory issues.
  • Risk management and risk assessment skills.
  • Ability to represent company with local regulators as required  
  • Technical proficiency and knowledge of Operational Procedures.
  • Technical proficiency in Auditing.
  • Technical proficiency in Event Investigation.
  • Technical proficiency in Emergency Response.
  • Proficiency in report writing and record keeping
