About the role

The North West Shelf and Scarborough Team are responsible for the delivering subsurface input for two non-operated assets within our Western Australian Heartland.

The Scarborough Gas field, discovered in 1979, has until recently been a stranded gas resource. A recent change in operatorship and development concept has expedited the development schedule with a Final Investment Decision (FID) expected within the next 12 months. The North West Shelf has been in production since 1984 and BHP participates as a non-operating partner in this asset. The NWS comprises a number of different fields produced via 3 platforms and tied back to 5 LNG trains onshore. 

The Principal Geologist will utilise Operator’s models, update existing models and lead the development of new models as required to verify resource ranges and subsequently provide input into optimising the development of the NWS and Scarborough fields as well as nearby discovered resources. 

This role is based in Perth and is the senior geologist within the team. The primary focus of this role is discipline lead within the broader region.

In this role you will:
  • Develop and lead key scopes of work incorporating both static and dynamic modelling and uncertainty analyses
  • Deliver static models as input for dynamic model with full characterization of uncertainty range
  • Incorporate recent well results, petrophysical updates, latest seismic and production data into new and existing static models
  • Work with subsurface team to define scope and test impact of remaining subsurface uncertainties to support development decisions
  • Provide full uncertainty analysis and development of representative low- and high-case scenarios for new geomodel to pass on to simulation
  • Ensure consideration and integration of geomodeling knowledge and experience from subject matter experts within the company into updated geomodels and uncertainty analysis
  • Promote best practices and guidelines in geomodelling in your team as well as across the broader subsurface team in Perth
  • Provide mentorship to less experienced staff within your team and group
  • Work within the Joint Venture framework to ensure that the best value opportunities are progressed by operator

About You

To be successful in this role you will have:
  • A Master’s degree or PHD in Geoscience
  • Significant and hands-on experience in development and production geology, geomodeling
  • An in depth understanding of integrating geological, geophysical and dynamic data sets into geological models
  • Be an expert user of Petrel software, considered SME in some areas
  • Have the ability to understand and integrate production data working closely with RE’s and PE’s
  • Be an excellent communicator with diplomacy skills to direct, persuade and influence others as this role will work across multi-discipline teams and groups, including JV Partners, to understand what is required of the key stakeholders 
  • An ability to filter down to the key question/issue that impacts the project and independently generate ideas and opportunities that have the potential to add value
