About the role

BHP Petroleum currently operates exploration licenses within the Western Gulf of Mexico (WGoM), and will be involved in active and extensive exploration activities in these areas for the next several years. The WGoM Exploration Team is a multi-disciplinary team responsible for sub-regional studies, access, prospect maturation, exploration well planning and execution in the Western US GOM, Trion license and Mexico Perdido areas.  The WGOM Exploration team is seeking Principal II Petrophysicist with strong formation evaluation background and capability to analyze and integrate petrophysical data across a wide range of scales in order to derive regionally applicable predictive trends. The candidate will be responsible for the petrophysical analysis and reservoir quality prediction in support of the regional play assessment and prospect maturation; planning and execution of advanced formation evaluation programs and post-well studies.  


This position is a grade 12 role.

In this role you will:
  • Lead petrophysical evaluations and reservoir quality prediction in support of WGOM Exploration team activities including play assessment, prospect portfolio generation, prospect maturation and well planning, lease sales and farm-ins
  • Perform in-depth well-specific and regional petrophysical studies, including full integration of all available log, formation pressure, rock and fluid data
  • Use available well control and analog rock data to predict porosity, permeability and water saturation distributions of clastic reservoirs
  • Contribute to reservoirs storage and deliverability risk assessment in the Volume-Risk-Value framework
  • Oversee planning and execution of formation evaluation programs involving advanced LWD and wireline tools, formation testing/fluid sampling and coring operations
  • Interact with JV partners, participate in data rooms
  • Present results to assurance and management
  • Mentor early career team members within GOM Exploration
  • Collaborate with other petrophysicists in Exploration, Appraisal, and Production teams
  • Meet all project schedules, deliverables, and subsurface milestones as outlined in the subsurface work plans
  • Represent BHP in GOM deep-water consortium project

About You

  • Proven petrophysical expertise in evaluation of siliciclastic and carbonate reservoirs
  • 15+ years of  work experience in the upstream petroleum industry
  • B.S.+ or higher in relevant geoscience or engineering discipline
  • Gulf of Mexico Exploration experience is a strong plus
  • Familiarity with GOM Paleogene play is a plus
  • Experience using analogue (external publically available) data for evaluations
  • Comfortable working with high degree of subsurface uncertainty
  • Good communicator, both written and spoken. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
  • Strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Mentoring and coaching ability
  • Action-oriented and focused on timely completing the work
