About the role

BHP is excited to bring together passionate and creative individuals with diverse Petroleum, Technology and Innovation backgrounds to form BHP’s new Petroleum Innovation Team. Our purpose is to enable the discovery, prioritization, de-risking and delivery of step change innovation opportunities in support of Petroleum growth and value. We are seeking unique and diverse skills to inject new thoughts and perspectives into our Innovation efforts.

To date, a portfolio of potential innovation opportunity themes has been developed in support of our mission to bring step-change innovation for increasing resource, lowering costs, increasing pace and ensuring safety.  The theme areas are:

  • Transparent Earth: improving our understanding of the sub-surface and increasing the pace of interpretation and analysis
  • Unlocking Recovery: maximizing recovery from our reservoirs
  • Facilities of the Future: improving health and safety, automating operations and reducing capital and operational costs

The Principal Innovation: Data Science/Software Development Lead will be part of an agile team responsible for de-risking and reducing uncertainty around how new technologies can be used to solve our most challenging problems. This role is responsible for leading and executing data science and software development efforts designed to bring about change in our innovation theme areas and make better use of BHP’s vast amounts of data. This role requires a unique skillset with the ability to merge the rapid developments of computer science and machine learning with the rich depth of disparate and complex data sets such as 3D spatial geoscience data, time series operations data, and legacy unstructured data. We need out of the box thinkers, unafraid to try new things and learn from how other industries work with data. This is a hands-on-keyboard role, not only developing algorithms to integrate and analyse data sets, but also providing leadership to a data science/software development team to build Proofs of Concepts and Minimum Viable Products proving out new and innovative concepts. In addition to technical delivery, this role will also provide “Big Picture” thought leadership in developing a broader data science strategy for the Petroleum business, including contributing to the development of data engineering, data movement/integration and data analytic strategies.

In this role you will:
  • Develop analytic algorithms and insights from complex, disparate and sometimes sparse data sets using the latest data science methodologies
  • Lead development of Proofs of Concepts and Minimum Viable Products capable of delivering analytic insights to the end user
  • Develop a Data Science and Analytics strategy for the broader Petroleum business
  • Collaborate with Petroleum Innovation Theme owners and the business to understand problem statements and formulate a plan for how data science can be applied
  • Assist with the build out and maintenance of an AWS development environment
  • Lead, mentor and develop other members of a data science team
  • Serve as a key advisor on petroleum industry data science trends, competitor activity, emerging technology solutions, opportunities for competitive advantage and for ecosystem partnerships
  • Research and identify potential technology solutions from external partners
  • Attend relevant industry and technology conferences/seminars and bring back learnings for sharing to the broader Innovation Team and Petroleum Business
  • Help to build and personally model capabilities and behaviours that value and promote innovation

About You

  • 10+ years’ experience in applying statistics & data science techniques to derive insightful and useful conclusions from large, complex, disparate data sets and identify areas for further analysis
  • Proficient in a wide spectrum of data science techniques which could include supervised and unsupervised machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, time series analysis, deep learning, neural networks, decision trees, feature selection, and geospatial modelling, just to name a few.
  • An expert in at least one programming language, and knows enough to be dangerous in others (i.e. Python, R, C#, Scala, Spark)
  • Familiar with computing architectures and PaaS services relevant to data science (i.e. Jupyter Notebooks, Hadoop, GPU computing)
  • Experience in DevOps principles and full-stack software development
  • Experience working in Agile product teams building Proofs of Concepts and Minimum Viable Products (Agile certifications a plus)
  • Experience as a lead data scientist and mentor
  • Knowledge of the Oil & Gas value chain
  • Knowledgeable in the latest data analytic trends in the industry
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, able to effectively explain technical information to various audiences
  • Excellent interpersonal, influencing and organization skills required to lead data science teams and interface with key stakeholders
  • Superior research skills to discover potential solution providers in the innovation ecosystem
  • Optimistic, resilient and self-motivated, undeterred by failure and happy to experiment.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, start-up-like environment
  • STEM degree (Master’s or PhD preferred) in relevant discipline (i.e. Analytics, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, etc.)
  • Adjacent industries are welcome, including (but not limited to) manufacturing, automotive, pharmaceutical, gaming, rocket science and astrophysics
