About the role

We are excited to be bringing together passionate and creative individuals with diverse Petroleum and Innovation backgrounds to form the Petroleum Innovation Team within Petroleum Transformation and Performance.  Our purpose is to enable the discovery, prioritization, de-risking and delivery of step change innovation opportunities in support of Petroleum growth and value.   Petroleum Innovation will bring together people, ideas and efforts to build capability, dismantle barriers to innovation and execute an innovation process that accelerates our big ideas to real business impact.

To date, strategic innovation challenge themes and a portfolio of potential opportunities have been developed in support of our growth mission focused on step-change innovation around our key value drivers of increasing resource, lowering cost, increasing pace and ensuring safety:

Transparent Earth: Creating value and growth through improved sub-surface understanding, pace of interpretation and analysis and better leveraging our creativity and collaboration to create optionality and improve decisions.

Unlocking Recovery:  Innovative approaches and technologies to maximize recovery from our reservoirs in exploration, appraisal and development and contingent resources in our existing asset portfolios

Facilities of the Future: Innovation around our future field developments which will improve on health and safety, provide the organization an ability to flex and scale according to the resource size and reduce supply chain capital expenditures.

The Principal Innovation: Ecosystem scanning, strategy & engagement is a key advisor to the Head of Innovation for Petroleum providing analysis and thought leadership on petroleum industry innovation trends, competitor activity, emerging technology solutions, opportunities for competitive advantage and for ecosystem partnerships.   This role will regularly interface with BHP Group Innovation and Portfolio Strategy & Development teams to provide information and to identify adjacencies outside of oil and gas and to understand general market trends on behalf of Petroleum Innovation.  The role will additionally conduct research into potential solutions for prototyping and de-risking of innovation challenges on behalf of the Petroleum Innovation team, understanding the full landscape of potential players and advising on maintaining positive relationships with potential collaborators.  This role will work closely with the Houston Innovation Hub and Principal Innovation leads for Transparent Earth, Unlocking Recovery and Facilities of the Future

This position is a grade 11 role.

In this role you will:
  • Provide industry analysis and insight, providing perspective and analytical capability in support of Petroleum Innovation strategy and projects
  • Continually monitor networks and internal and external data sources to provide expert viewpoint on industry trends, market dynamics, key competitors, and suppliers
  • Use knowledge and intelligence to validate commercial recommendations and ensure strategies and decisions create value and competitive advantage
  • Research and identify potential solutions from external partners as part of the Houston Innovation Hub’s de-risking efforts
  • Attend relevant industry and technology conferences / seminars and bring back learnings and share with the broader Innovation team and Petroleum business
  • Develop a program of external innovation ecosystem speakers to expose BHP Petroleum collaborators to the latest technology trends and capabilities related to our innovation focus areas.
  • Build and maintain relationships with new and existing external ecosystem partners
  • Develop others & advance projects by sharing knowledge and networks and be able to articulate the opportunity and impact of external forces on BHP Petroleum’s drive to improve business performance
  • Help to build, maintain and utilize a system within Petroleum that taps into collective knowledge and allows for the promotion and sharing of good ideas
  • Help to build and personally model capabilities and behaviours that value and promote innovation
  • Provide Petroleum Industry perspective to Group Innovation ecosystem analysis.

About You

  • Direct innovation and ecosystem management experience in Petroleum
  • Experience working within a Petroleum Asset or Function in either a Technical, Strategy, Innovation or Functional role
  • Knowledgeable in both industry specific technology and the latest digital trends in machine learning, IoT, AR/VR etc)
  • Superior research skills to discover potential solution providers in the innovation ecosystem
  • Experience with Agile Product teams building Proofs of Concepts and Minimum Viable Products
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing and organization skills, as responsible for managing interfaces with many key stakeholders.
  • Ability to derive insightful conclusions from large, complex data sets and set direction for any further work required.
