About the role

We are currently seeking an innovative Principal Innovation, Governance and Portfolio Management to join our Innovation Team within the sub-function of Transformation. This is a full time role supported by a leader who is passionate about flexible working arrangements.


The purpose of the team is to develop BHP’s innovation strategy, and implement a balanced portfolio of work that meets enterprise targets.  A Strategic Research & Development portfolio is developed to provide the next tranche of productivity improvements and growth options for the organization.  Relationships, internally and externally, are built to integrate and expedite acceleration of innovation and technology solutions.  In this role, you will promote the continuous improvement efforts of our operations and functions in creating value and driving sustainable outcomes.


Reporting to the Manager of Innovation Performance this role will see you providing thought leadership to Innovation on the long term strategy and the short term plans in executing this strategy; by leveraging a strong foundation of intelligence around emerging technology, socio-economic, geopolitical and environmental trends. You will utilise innovative approaches, tools and technology to add real value to the business - setting standards to guide improvement activity, elevating and supporting our people. The role will also support an effective governance framework for Innovation.

About You

The successful candidate will have relevant experience in a Strategy Development or a Technology Scanning role. A mining and resources background is not required and we welcome diverse industry backgrounds into this role.   Your detailed analytical skills including solid governance, business and financial acumen will ensure success in this role. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are a must, allowing you to build relationships across operations and functions and across all organisational levels.


To be successful you will demonstrate the following:
  • Strong root cause analysis and problem solving skills with a collaborative approach to finding practical solutions;
  • Be a thought leader with the ability to connect the dots and work with ambiguity;
  • Experience coaching improvement professionals in adopting AGILE or LEAN approach or a similar methodology to deliver value across the supply chain;
  • Have 10-15 years’ experience working in a portfolio management and also R&D/ Technology Development Governance role.
  • Have demonstrated the ability to apply product centric and commercialisation mindset towards R&D.
  • Demonstrated experience is facilitation and leading change in organization
  • Demonstrated experience working within an innovative organisation or team
  • Proven ability to project manage across varying work fronts and multidisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated experience working within a global, or remote, team
  • Proven experience working with leadership teams
  • Courage to challenge the status quo with clear, data backed, reasoning
  • Degreed in a science or engineering field, finance and business.
  • Proven experience crafting communication messages to enterprise leadership team, e.g. memo, board paper, presentation



Your responsibilities
  • Engage relevant stakeholders to develop the governance and portfolio management philosophy of the portfolio for Innovation in BHP
  • Implement and maintain the governance and portfolio management framework and systems, provide support to ensure that the resultant portfolio of work is balanced and meets BHP targets
  • Develop and maintain a Strategic Research & Development (R&D) portfolio by putting in place tools and processes to provide the next tranche of productivity improvements and corporate growth options and ability to scale across the organization
  • Work across the Innovation groups, i.e. R&D, Petroleum, Marketing and Supply to manage the OnePortfolio view. Continuously strive to balance simplification of process and governance with the aim of velocity and commercialisation/scaling of R&D development.
  • Develop key success measures that will help drive the speed of innovation and also the “culture” of innovation
  • Work with the innovation lead team, business teams and planning teams to consolidate Innovation portfolio and translated effectively into Life of Asset, 5-year plans and 2-year budgets
  • Lead the discussion with key stakeholders in developing a methodology to leverage the risk framework to value the portfolio
  • Play an active role in a values-based social environment underpinned by balancing accountability and performance with leading edge emergent work practices
  • Implement a business case development service for groups and parts of Innovation
  • Assist in the development of Innovation Roadmaps and blueprints for future operating models for each of BHP’s operating assets
