About the role

We are excited to be bringing together passionate and creative individuals with diverse Petroleum and Innovation backgrounds to form the Petroleum Innovation Team within Petroleum Transformation and Performance.  Our purpose is to enable the discovery, prioritization, de-risking and delivery of step change innovation opportunities in support of Petroleum growth and value.   Petroleum Innovation will bring together people, ideas and efforts to build capability, dismantle barriers to innovation and execute an innovation process that accelerates our big ideas to real business impact.

To date, strategic innovation challenge themes and a portfolio of potential opportunities have been developed in support of our growth mission focused on step-change innovation around our key value drivers of increasing resource, lowering capex, increasing pace and ensuring safety:

Transparent Earth: Creating value and growth through improved sub-surface understanding, pace of interpretation and analysis and better leveraging our creativity and collaboration to create optionality and improve decisions.

Unlocking Recovery:  Innovative approaches and technologies to maximize recovery from our reservoirs in exploration, appraisal and development and contingent resources in our existing asset portfolios

Facilities of the Future: Innovation around our future field developments which will improve on HSEC, provide the organization an ability to flex and scale according to the resource size and reduce supply chain capex.

The Principal Innovation: Transparent Earth will bring together cross-functional, internal and external expertise to build on the initial challenge vision and opportunities to determine a roadmap for success, develop and enable plans to continue to identify, de-risk and ultimately embed new approaches into the business.

This position is a grade 13 role.

In this role you will:
  • Develop and communicate a compelling vision, and innovation roadmap for Transparent Earth aligned with our Petroleum strategy and transformational business goals.
  • Work with teams across Petroleum to understand business opportunities and challenges and develop, characterize, value and prioritize a portfolio of Transparent Earth innovation opportunities.
  • Support scoping of forward work, identify dependencies, enablers constraints and resource requirements for implementation and work with stakeholders to address
  • Project manage and/or advise proof-of-concept and execution projects as needed in an agile team-of-teams environment with asset partners.
  • Maintain line-of sight to progress across the Transparent Earth portfolio on behalf of Petroleum.
  • Actively engage in the internal and external ecosystem to scout for and participate in development of Petroleum’s view of emerging innovation approaches, technologies and potential collaboration partners in support of Transparent Earth and engage with processes and tools that enable this information to be shared across the enterprise.
  • Coordinate Petroleum’s involvement in Group Innovation’s resource exploration initiatives related to our minerals businesses.

About You

  • You have developed the necessary skills and experience to function as a Principal III level subject matter expert in a geoscience discipline with experience across the Petroleum value chain.  You have a strong understanding of interfaces and decision processes across, geophysics, geology, reservoir engineering, drilling, operations, technology together with the broader business context.
  • Strong understanding of geophysical and machine learning / AI technologies and approaches
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills with proven ability to influence without direct authority
  • Well established communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Highly curious strategic thinker and rapid learner with ability to embrace uncertainty and ambiguity whilst articulating a compelling roadmap for Transparent Earth.
  • Proven project management capability.  Direct innovation experience preferred.
  • Optimistic, resilient and self-motivated
  • Occasional travel required.
  • Master’s degree in geoscience discipline or equivalent.
