About the role

We are currently seeking a Principal – Mine Planning and Engineering to join the Technical Centre of Excellence in our Resource Engineering Excellence team.

Reporting to the Global Practice Lead Mine Planning and Engineering you will provide thought leadership in Mine Planning with a focus on developing global mine planning systems, tools and capability levels through collaboration within our business, external benchmarking and continuous improvement.

This is a full time role with company-wide reach offering flexible conditions. The role is part of a team that is passionate about continuous improvement and delivering value to our operations.

Your responsibilities include:
  • Development and prioritisation of the Technology Roadmap for Mine Planning and Engineering, including management and/or support for relevant innovation and technology initiatives internally and externally; 
  • Development of Global Mine Planning and Engineering standards and execution of an assurance program against these standards;
  • Development of global mine planning tools and systems through replication of leading practices, external benchmarking and Continuous Improvement methodologies; 
  • Working closely with key stakeholders in the business to enhance mine planning skills and capabilities;
  • Representing BHP to tertiary education providers related to Resource Engineering matters; 
  • Leading and/or participating in technical assurance reviews to ensure technical excellence in mine planning activities across BHP, and;
  • Undertaking high-value mine planning project work across BHP.

About You

Ideally you would have tertiary qualifications in Engineering (e.g. Civil/Mining), and significant mining industry experience, with a deep understanding of the key value drivers and mine planning strategies across a range of commodities and geographies. Acquired RPEQ status will be viewed favourably.

To be successful in the role you will have:
  • A deep understanding of the business and the integration of mine planning inputs, including broader resource engineering inputs and activities (such as geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology and water management, processing, tailings and closure planning);
  • Experience with business valuation practices;
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in Mine Planning (short term, long term and strategic) and operations;
  • Experience with value-chain optimisation & with optimisation of mine planning processes
