About the role

The role will be to develop and implement contracting strategies and plans on large-medium projects within the Petroleum division, manage all pre-award, post-award and close-out contracts activities through various projects’ phases, implement BHP standards, processes, systems and plans for the projects in the region, that will ensure safe delivery of value maximising investments. ·   Ensures conformance with the BHP Charter, the BHP Group Level Documents, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations;

·   Provides an overriding commitment to health (including mental health), safety, environment responsibility and sustainable development with relentless focus on lowering risk exposure;

·   Formulates and develops Project Contracts and Procurement Strategy, Contracting Plan and Sourcing Strategy to mitigate risks and maximize opportunities;

·   Establishes and maintains risk plan to assure effective management of the project’s Contracts & Procurement scope of work, formulates mitigation strategies;

·   Leads and manages contracts full bid cycle, contract negotiations (including terms and conditions), coordinates technical scopes of work, including interface with all project disciplines, formation and post-award administration for high to medium risk contracts;

·   Leads the stakeholder alignment and development of the contracting and procurement strategies for the project as well as each contract package, identifying the preferred types of contracts for the project for each project phase, considering the project and each package scope and risks;

·   Provides leadership, functional expertise, and support to the project team whilst fostering a positive team culture;

·   Establishes effective communication channels within the project and functional teams to encourage collaboration;

·   Interfaces with all levels within the project team as well as within the function. Leads meetings with interfacing disciplines in support of scope or commercial terms development;

·   Leads presentations and meetings with contractors as well as within the project team and function;

·   Develops a claims prevention program;

·   May provide supervision to Contract Specialists (formation and administration);

·   Ensures successful implementation of contracting and procurement strategies, standards, processes, systems and plans for a program of large, medium and small capital projects;

·   Conducts and maintains continuing review of progress for each contract and provides management with information pertaining to any financial, technical, or commercial difficulties;

·   Remains informed of contractors and market conditions; evaluates key learnings,

·   Identifies opportunities for continuous Improvement;

·   Collaborates with Project Centre of Excellence (PCoE) to ensure provision of data requirements for project reporting & control;

·   Collaborates with PC&P Manager and Head of Function to ensure alignment of functional standards;

·   Maintains an awareness of relevant central agreements and/or relationships and ensures that they are appropriately leveraged on the project portfolio;

·   Maintains the interface with the Supply Category Management and Purchasing sub-functions in establishing and executing Contract & Procurement strategies;

Applies / optimizes management processes / tools.

·   Strong experience in negotiating contract terms and conditions as well as commercial terms for a variety of contracts (lump sum, cost reimbursable, unit price, multiple priced);

·   Demonstrated understanding and experience with contract law and contract management/administration through pre-award, post award, close-out;

·   Collaborative mind set and advanced interpersonal skills;

Proven ability to operate effectively in complex and ambiguous environments


·   Ability to think laterally to independently resolve issues and influence change;

·   Ability to operate independently as a Project Contracts Lead on a $100 to $500 MM TIC project;

·   Detail oriented, organised, and objective;

Professional
Relevant tertiary qualifications, preferably in an Engineering discipline (s), Construction Management, Economics, Quantity Surveying, Supply Chain, Legal (Construction Law) or related discipline; 10+ years' experience in Contract Management on Capital Projects, a high degree of business acumen with deep understanding of high risk Projects Contracts & Procurement Strategies. 

Experience ·        Understanding and experience in :
·        Execution of all project phases (identification (Studies), selection (Pre-FEED), definition (FEED) and execution (EPC)) in Contracting & Procurement;
·        Extensive project experience and knowledge in contract formation and contract administration required;
·        Managing a large portfolio of spend “End To End”;
·        Instinctively knowing what creates value and what levers need to be pushed;
·        Contract management - formation through post award management in the home office and in the field (at the jobsite), claims assessment and management;
·        Expertize in contract negotiation and deal design skills for a variety of contracts;
·        Relating well with people with an engaging style, which quickly enables building of trust and strong relationships with stakeholders;
·        Ability to bring people together to gain alignment;
·        Ability to interface in a global setting and to implement excellence across the PC&P organization.
