Potash is a potassium-rich salt mainly used in fertiliser to improve the quality and yield of agricultural production. As an essential nutrient for plant growth, potash is a vital link in the global food supply chain. BHP holds exploration permits and mining leases covering approximately 9,600 square kilometres in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada.
The Jansen Potash Project, located approximately 140 km east of Saskatoon, is BHP’s first potash project. Jansen will add diversity and a Canadian presence to our global portfolio. Jansen’s large resource endowment provides the opportunity to develop it in stages, with anticipated initial capacity of 4 Mtpa.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team, based in Saskatoon, SK. This role will develop, deploy, and continuously improve maintenance plans for the future operation. The maintenance team is looking for a strong leader to assist in the implementation of these plans and drive the concepts for the future operation into the design and future execution phase.
As the Principal Reliability Engineer, you will be responsible for:
  • Building and developing equipment maintenance strategies for all areas of the the future operations. You will also own the associated task lists and work instructions and must ensure that they are accurately documented;
  • Identifying all equipment that requires inspections and repairs based on legislative and statutory requirements and create Safety Critical Equipment master data;
  • Developing a maintenance budget based on the preventative and corrective maintenance work strategies;
  • Bench-marking work management metrics to be deployed in the future operations to measure effectiveness of the work management process;
  • Relentlessly pursuing value for future operations by being a steward of the operating cost estimates and ensuring that we are developing the safest, most cost efficient operation possible using the most current and reliable technology available; 
  • Encouraging peers and colleagues across operational areas to follow the established processes by promoting operating discipline; 
  • Building and maintaining relationships with Contractors to ensure execution of Maintenance activities in line with statutory and legislative requirements; 
  • Providing maintenance input into the detailed design of the Jansen project by ensuring the maintenance vision is captured within the design basis, standards, and is reflected within the layouts and equipment specifications; 
  • Documenting study work in the form of a formal Operations Plan for internal peer review;
  • Participating in the identification and management of operations risks, communicating risks to relevant stakeholders and identifying solutions; 
  • Contributing to internal reporting by reporting achievements and risks against deliverables.

About You

The successful candidate will have a post-secondary degree or diploma in a relevant technical discipline or the equivalent experience/education combination. You will need some experience in reliability and maintenance engineering within an industrial or mining environment. Experience working with equipment design and asset management would be considered an asset, but is not required. Project experience would also be considered an asset.
You will have strong communication skills, both written and verbal as well as be proficient in working with technology.
