About the role

The role reports to the Manager Systems Engineering, within the Systems Engineering team. As a Principal Systems Safety Engineer, your core accountabilities will be to:
  • Define Systems Safety lifecycle management for Equipment Automation and Control System related studies and projects;
  • Ensure compliance with relevant statutory and legislative provisions;
  • Provide Systems Safety input to factory and site acceptance testing and site commissioning;
  • Develop technical documentation to satisfy Systems Safety lifecycle for Equipment Automation and Control System related studies and projects;
  • Ensure that the operational safety objectives (defined at System level) and engineering safety requirements (defined at equipment level) are correctly spanned to all levels of the project development (software, hardware, COTS);
  • Interface with vendors to ensure compliance with Safety requirements specifications.
  • Maintain an ongoing review of Incident Reports, identify breaches of system safety controls and identify new requirements.
  • Participate in automation related ICAMs to provide System Safety input to that ICAM.
  • Promotion of Safety in Design;
  • Provide ad-hoc training to BHP personnel about Systems Safety and Functional Safety fundamentals;
  • Assist with completion/development and continuous improvement of standards for Systems Safety within BHP; and
  • Work with business partners/stakeholders to integrate Systems Safety standards/processes into BHP systems.

About You

  • Proven experience in Functional Safety within the mining and resources industry. Specifically, the application of IEC 62061, IEC 61508 or IEC 61511 during front-end design and design execution.
  • Understand the principles for the design of safety-related parts of the control system according to ISO 13849-1.
  • Understand the principles for the design of safety-related electrical control systems according to IEC 62061
  • Experience with the application of IEC 62061 during the operational phase is desirable.
  • Sound knowledge of Australian Standards, codes of practice, and regulations relating to Systems Safety, Functional Safety and safety in design.
  • Proven competence in the following areas: fault tree analysis; risk assessment, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA); safety systems hardware design, and; functional safety management.
  • Experience with development of safety lifecycle documentation, such as hardware and software requirements and design specifications, and test documentation.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate requirements, challenges, and options to stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of Systems Engineering is desirable.
  • You will be forward thinking, a strong influencer, a good listener and identifying and seeking opportunities for improvement, while having the ability to influence others and manage change.
  • You will be a proactive team player with the ability to deal with both strategic and technical issues. You will need to deal with numerous stakeholders, projects, priorities actions and have exceptional attention to detail where needed and the ability to communicate effectively across all levels and disciplines. Previous experience in a large-scale equipment automation and or control system environments using a variety OEM equipment will place you in high regard.

  • You will have Tertiary qualifications in Electrical/Mechatronic/Mechanical Engineering and/or a related discipline.
  • Certified Functional Safety qualification or equivalent is highly desirable.
  • Qualification in Functional Safety in the topic of functional safety of machinery is highly desirable.
  • Further postgraduate qualifications would be well regarded.
