About the role

We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our team as a Principal Tax who will be responsible to lead a team of specialists responsible for income and indirect tax accounting and compliance requirements for entities operating in US and Canada tax jurisdictions.

  • Global Accounting & Reporting Finance Teams
  • Other Global Asset Services Functions (HR, Supply and Technology)
External Relationships:
  • Vendors
  • Auditors
Core Accountabilities
  • Conform with the BHP Charter, Group Level Documents, Code of Business Conduct and relevant statutory obligations
  • Have an overriding commitment to health, safety and environment responsibility and to sustainable development
  • Identifying continuous, sustainable improvement and simplification opportunities in the tax accounting and US tax compliance area
  • Ensuring all tax accounting matters are appropriately identified, analysed, documented and raised
  • Directing and coaching team members to ensure that team targets are achieved and personal technical skills continue to develop
  • Leading the tax team by setting expectations, developing competencies, evaluating and managing performance
  • Providing or coordinating technical tax advice to team members, Finance Global Asset Services accountants and other Group Functions
  • Managing the efficient and effective use of 1SAP tax calculator, OneSource tax software and other tax accounting/reporting applications and templates
  • Managing the calendar of scheduled submissions to regulators for all entities
  • Ensuring the accurate preparation and timely submission of income tax returns
  • Managing the quality and timeliness of submissions in connection with the consolidated tax returns
  • Managing the quality and timeliness of submissions to Tax Reporting and Governance and assist with resolving any associated queries
  • Reviewing of tax proofs and reconciliations in line with the allocated frequency to ensure accurate tax balances are reported
  • Working collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure tax implications of transactions are properly planned and accounted.

About You

  • Undergraduate degree in finance or accounting
  • Preferred – Professional accounting qualification
Experience & Technical Competencies
  • Minimum of 10 years working experience within the finance function of a large corporate or professional environment
  • Demonstrated accounting, analytical and investigative skills
  • Knowledge and experience in tax accounting and reporting
  • Understanding of US income tax is an advantage
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong leadership skills including coaching and development
  • Working knowledge of SAP and associated processes beneficial
Non-Technical Competencies:
  • Languages - Fluent English, both verbal and written
