About the role

This role will support the Legacy Assets BHP in management of the US land portfolio with holdings in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and California. The successful Candidate will implement land management through controlling the risk of title loss, maintaining an accurate land database, provide landman support for divestitures and acquisitions, and maintain key internal and external stakeholder relationships.

This position is a grade 11 role and is based in Tucson.

In this role you will:
  • Manages the risk of Loss of Title through Tax Payment dates and authorizations, Permit/Lease payments, Permit/Lease obligations, Managing renewals/terms of contracts, Managing classification of land i.e. industrial, commercial, etc, Maintaining Filings of records in the proper state and federal regulatory agencies, Managing boundaries to avoid adverse possession of private land owners, Risk review of liabilities covering the surface ownership and mineral ownership dealing from environmental to trespass
  • Maintaining a database of locations owned that is useful and needed for operational activities, useful for other company sectors inside BHP such as minerals exploration and the need to understand the boundary of BHP land versus boundary of other 3rd parties specifically competitors
  • First line of defence on proper analyzation of contracts specifically land related
  • Proper risk and due diligence on Acquisition as well as Divestiture to include negotiation skills for land Acquisition and Divestiture, evaluating gaps in the process, researching to compare the land values and compliance approvals
  • Vendor management over title reviews as well as surveying and outside counsel as well as conferring with internal counsel
  • Maintaining a review of current laws of the land federally, state, region, and city to assure the compliance of BHP
  • Maintenance and compliance of any 3rd party leases on BHP lands
  • Maintain liaison and strong working relationships with external stakeholders including regulators, key contractors, business partners and community. 
  • Maintain compliance with all local legislation and regulations, Group level Documents and local asset procedures including safety, health, environment and community and associated corporate reporting
  • Maintain strong working relationships with local community, contractors and government/regulator stakeholders. 

About You

  • Minimum requirement of a Bachelor degree in Land and Resource Management or related Bachelor of Science degree with landman experience.
  • Registration or certification in the landman profession is preferred
  • A minimum of ten years’ experience in mining, petroleum, projects or closure planning. 
  • Solid understanding of land title and deeds plus commercial land transactions is required
  • Versed in computer aided drafting software; experience Landfolio and GIS are preferred.
  • Understanding on use of SAP business software is preferred.
  • Solid interpersonal skills including an ability to interact and communicate professionally and respectfully with site staff, functional support teams, and regulatory agency representatives.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
