About the role

As the Safe Working Specialist you will be part of the Rail Operations team, reporting to the Rail Operations Services, Logistics and Rail Safety Lead. This role manages the interface with the Office of National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) and compliance with the Act and Regulations, including notification of reportable events to ONRSR, management of the Rail Rule Book and completion of Safe Working reports.
This role is either FIFO out of Perth working a 5/2/4/3 roster or residential in Port Hedland working a 5/2 roster. You will be required to have a National Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.

In this role you will:
  • Manage the interface with the Office of National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) and compliance with the Act and Regulations, including notification of reportable events to ONRSR, management of the Rail Rule Book and completion of Safe Working reports.
  • Review and actioning of outstanding risk mitigation tasks stemming from historical ONRSR site audits
  • Increased auditing of our compliance to the Act and Regulations to facilitate improved compliance in a proactive, rather than reactive manner
  • Safe Work project work stemming from RTP and the Rail Engineering team (such as the Rail Rule Book Simplification Project)
  • Data review to understand current performance and opportunities for process improvement and verification within the Rail Operations Services team.
  • Analyising Trends for Safe Work events which will enable the implementation of key initiatives to reduce Safe Work events
  • Constantly reviewing and compliance of the Act and Regulations which are: Rail Safety National Law (WA) Act and Rail Safety National Law (WA) Regulations


About You

To be successful in this role, you will have substantial experience of the practical application of rail safety legislation, compliance to BHPIO Railroad Rules, Work Instructions, Operating Instructions and Operating Notices. You will have the ability to provide assistance in administering and managing compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements which includes Rail Safety National Law (WA) Act and Regulations.

Your passion for safety and commitment to your own wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around you will be second to none, and you have a strong understanding of Safe Working requirements. You are able to work independently and can manage multiple tasks in a dynamic work environment. By nature, you are at ease engaging and influencing people at all levels of the organisation and are able to build productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders with effective communication and consultation to maintain the safety of the rail network.

You are a creative thinker who can effectively analyses issues using data and logic to problem solve and the ability to prioritise and meet legislative reporting deadlines. If you are Management Systems Auditor having that experience would be seen as a benefit to this position.
