About the role

  • This role will develop, implement, and maintain the System Safety and Human Factors assurance program of the Rail Technology Programme.
  • Lead and maintain the System Safety Assurance governance processes for the Program
  • Project Management for the delivery of safety assurance deliverables and regulatory compliance.
  • Develop and maintain a robust Operational Safety Case to support the various deployment stages for the project ensuring business and regulatory engagement and approval
  • The execution of an effective System Safety Assurance program throughout the lifecycle of the RTP projects. This involves ensuring that all reasonably foreseeable safety hazards and risks are identified, quantified and assessed and treated to an acceptable residual risk level. Hazard identification is to be performed through the application of structured analysis techniques and ONRSR accepted procedures for risk assessment. All safety risks shall be managed in accordance with SFAIRP Principle, and be demonstrated through the V&V process to have been addressed.
  • Provide diligent oversight of the vendor’s Safety Assurance and Human Factors Assessment engineering activities.
  • Maintain and execute the RTP Safety Assurance Plan and the RTP Operational Hazard Log.
  • Oversee the hazard management and transfer activities between the RTP owner’s team, RTP Operational Readiness, the site Rail Operations team, Technology and the RTP Vendor.
  • Provide due-diligence and governance of Systems Safety through oversight of the vendor’s safety assurance and safety engineering activities in accordance with their approved plans.
  • Ensure conformance with the BHP Billiton Charter, the BHP Billiton Group Level Documents, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations.

About You

  • Ideally you will hold a tertiary qualification in software, electrical or systems engineering   
  • A ISO9001 Lead auditor certification or equivalent would be advantageous in this role
  • Knowledge of the rail technology systems and operational concepts would set you up for success in this position and an understanding of the specific challenges that pertain to engineering software-based, safety-related systems including practical application of Human Factors engineering.
  • Knowledge of objective Systems Safety Assurance methodologies and analysis techniques, ideally applied in the rail industry but military, nuclear or oil & gas applications are also acceptable
  • Knowledge of the main System Safety and Human Factor Assessment standards applicable in the rail industries - IEC 61508, CENELEC EN50126. 50128, 50129 and 50159
  • Knowledge of the practical application of SFAIRP, development and analysis of tolerable hazard rate fault trees and the application of safety integrity levels
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills are essential to this role
  • At least eight years post-graduate experience in a systems engineering environment and exposure to a safety or systems assurance or a high-integrity software development.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a rail related role
