About the role

The Principal Electrical Engineer I is responsible for providing technical support to the GOMPU operated assets in the electrical discipline.  The position is responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining systems and processes to assess, monitor, and continuously improve the integrity of MV and LV electrical system and equipment within GOMPU.  This position will provide expertise, direction in the design procurement, installation, commissioning, operation and troubleshooting of MV and LV Electrical Systems and components for 2 floating offshore hydrocarbon production facilities. Management of the design and implementation of small projects within the area of expertise on the operated assets as assigned.


This position will also provide technical support, guidance and sharing of best practices with GOMPU non-operated assets and across the production units within the Petroleum organization.



Accountabilities:

  • Experience in the design, testing, commissioning, operation, & maintenance of HV & LV power generations systems, switchgear, transformers, motor control centers, VFD’s, motors, power management systems, protection application, electrical buildings, DC systems, lighting, UPS’s, cable sizing, grounding sizing and cable tray design.
  • Experience on Power system analysis studies: Load flow, Fault level, Transient Stability, Dynamic and transient start up, Harmonics and Relay coordination studies, arc flash study, load shedding, Hazardous area classification and grounding system.
  • Extensive experience in supporting the operation of Electrical systems in the field. Experience in troubleshooting and operation of these systems. Willing to visit offshore operational sites as needed.
  • Experience on maintenance and troubleshooting of gas and diesel power generators.
  • Experience to implement electrical safety in the work place NFPA 70E
  • Governance role to ensure engineering, maintenance, and project work is carried out in accordance with the required technical standards, processes, and procedures while operating in compliance with local regulations and corporate standards.
  • Own and continually improve the GOMPU electrical inspection strategies and processes to ensure optimum balance between technical integrity, reliability, and cost.
  • Monitor activities and developments in industry groups, regulators, and contractors to identify and support implementation of best practices and technological innovations across the GOMPU.
  • Develop relationships with Electrical engineers in BHP's functional engineering group and other PU's worldwide to promote cross learning and improvement.
 
HSE/Risk

  • Key participant in Field Leadership program, providing technical leadership to the assurance of procedural and single fatality controls
  • Critical Control Owner for Emergency Power and Ignition Prevention
  • Contract owner for critical support services to ensure the safe, cost effective and reliable production
  • Participate in risk management through; HAZOP, HAZID and other processes
  • Periodic interface with local Regulator regarding annual inspection programs and specific issues that arise

Productivity

  • Support Operations teams, front line supervision and remote engineering for day to day operations to ensure the safe production of hydrocarbons across all operated sites
  • Steward the development of maintenance strategies related to electrical systems and components to ensure safe and reliable production
  • Provide electrical expertise to small and medium size projects across all operated sites.
Development

  • Extensive experience in design of Electrical systems. One-line development, schematics, specifications, data sheets, inspection, testing, commissioning, start-up of E&I systems.
People

  • Mentoring of early career engineers.

About You

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years industry related experience
  • Professional/Chartered Engineer status is desirable but not essential
Experience & Technical Competencies

  • Strong technical knowledge of MV and LV electrical system, operation and maintenance requirements to safety design and operate MV and LV equipment.
  • Proven troubleshooting skills
  • Experience with NEC, API and IEEE standards.
  • Strong technical knowledge of hazardous area classification and grounding system
  • Strong communications and influencing skills
  • Knowledge of US and International equipment standards
  • Knowledge of US Regulatory requirements – BSEE, US Coast Guard and American Bureau of Shipping
