About the role

Reporting to the Geotechnical Superintendent, the Senior Geotechnical Engineer provides geotechnical support to the operation through delivering appropriate design in order to ensure the integrity of the mine openings are maintained for their designated life and will meet current and future production requirements.In this role you will:
  • Be first and foremost focused on creating a culture of care by being a visible safety leader, engaging, developing and coaching
  • Coordinate the Geotechnical functions on a daily basis, as well as maintain the Operational Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP)
  • Adhere to and ensure accountabilities as outlined in the Olympic Dam GCMP
  • Develop a routine auditing/testing program to ensure full compliance with the requirements of the GCMP and Safety standards
  • Ensure long-term Geotechnical strategy matches 5 year production schedule
  • Assess and approve all development and stope designs, assigning reinforcement requirements based on the design life and as stipulated in the GCMP, as well as assess and sign-off on all rehabilitation requirements
  • Management and scoping of consultancy support to the Geotechnical function and audit results of any consultancy recommendations
  • Conduct geotechnical investigation and evaluation of key infrastructure prior to, during and post construction to ensure the integrity of the operational systems are maintained for the required design life
  • Develop a geotechnical design criteria based on empirical rock mass properties for each geotechnical domain within the lease area
  • Provide geotechnical assistance to design engineers
  • Numerical modelling of regional stope extraction sequences to optimise performance and operational integrity
  • Develop monitoring and instrumentation programs for stopes as and when required
  • Train and develop engineering, geology and operational personnel to increase site based geotechnical skills and control
  • Conduct geotechnical investigations and evaluations of all backfill placed to maintain system integrity within the operation

About You

  • Demonstrate the confidence to lead by example, hold yourself and others accountable and coach others in ‘Safety Leadership’
  • Degree qualified in Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology along with minimum five years’ underground mining experience in an operational environment
  • Commencement or completion of post-graduate studies in Geotechnical Engineering (preferred)
  • Ability to match Geotechnical strategies to the long term Mine Plans
  • Knowledge of project management techniques and financial analysis tools and methods
  • Open stoping and cemented fill technologies experience is required
  • Knowledge of underground mining methods and analytical skills complemented with a working knowledge of relevant geotechnical software packages
  • Team focused whilst being able to work independently
  • Skilled in building rapport with key stakeholders and the ability to clearly communicate across multiple levels
